Actually, I would say it is contrary ’ Officially NO, But, In spirit YES’
Irrespective of the Govt recognizing hockey as a “National Sport”, I think majority of the Indian population do believe and consider hockey as our national sport because that’s one sport that brought us world recognition in sports for six decades. It’s a different fact that hockey lost it’s popularity after 1980s for various reasons including the astro-turf requirement and popularity of cricket powered by big houses like BCCI and the likes.
Having said and done, I still think we have lot of reasons to be proud of our rich hockey history and is the most likely sport to be considered our “National Sport”.
