:rotating_light: FC Goa to field all-Indian squad against Al Wahda as foreigners leave for home

Spanish defender Ivan Gonzalez was the only player initially unavailable due to a double booking. But with Covid-19 cases rising alarmingly in the country and foreign countries putting India on a travel red list, the club has decided to allow the foreigners to leave before the conclusion of the ACL.

Besides the Spanish players – Ivan, Edu Bedia and Jorge Ortiz – coach Juan Ferrando and conditioning coach Javier Gonzalez have also packed their bags for home. Australian defender James Donachie is also on the flight to Madrid via Paris from Delhi.

Abu Dhabi’s Al Wahda plays in the UAE Pro League and are coached by former Ajax head coach Henk ten Cate.

Their league campaign is ongoing and the club is currently placed eighth on the table, 35 points from 23 matches and with three games to go.

This is their 12th appearance in the AFC Champions League. They are currently at the second position on the group table with 10 points from five matches. FC Goa Coach Juan Ferrando :speaking_head:

“It’s a difficult game against Al Wahda. They have chance of qualifying for the next stage. We are thinking of finishing third. I told the players, ‘don’t relax, thinking this is the last game’. This is the Champions League. We have to be strong, find the best XI and ensure we have the best tactical plan in place.”

Al Wahda Coach Henk ten Cate :speaking_head:

“We want to win but it will not be an easy game as we have a couple of players suspended. It will be hard because FC Goa are still in search of their first win and they will do everything to get the three points,” said coach Henk ten Cate.

FC Goa are third in the group, ahead of Al Rayyan, with three points. Significantly, the debutants have lost games only against group leaders and last year’s finalists Persepolis FC from Iran.

With Persepolis expected to top the group, Al Wahda are hoping to advance as one of the three best runners-up. A win against Goa and 13 points should be good enough for the four-time UAE Pro League champions.

FC Goa defence, Dheeraj in particular, has stood firm against Al Wahda’s attacks and helped the team stay in the game. Goa have also had chances of their own, but neither team has found the net and the game remains goalless at the break.

More of the same in the second-half, lads! :+1:

FT: :india: FCGoa 0-2 ALWAHDA :united_arab_emirates:

Dheeraj Singh led FC Goa’s determined defence against Al Wahda and kept them away from scoring for most of the game. But the resistance was finally overcome in the second half and a second goal was scored towards the end to bring FC Goa’s campaign to an end.

The Gaurs finish third in Group E of 2021 ACL, a point above bottom-placed Al Rayyan. Persepolis are the group winners and Al Wahda are two points behind them.

Not the result that we expected but the boys I am sure played with the same zeal despite key players missing the match due to COVID situation.

Gaurs finished third with three points, above bottom-placed Al Rayyan who finished on two points.

FC Goa Standings ACL

Overall I think FC Goa had a decent Champions League campaign considering that this was FC Goa’s maiden participation in ACL.
