Last night, Erling Haaland donned the blue of Manchester City and traveled back to Signal Iduna Park to take against Borussia Dortmund, his former team.
By his standards, it was a brief cameo because he only played for 45 minutes until Bernardo Silva took his place at halftime. In addition to failing to score, the Norwegian also failed to make a single attempt at goal while he was on the field.
With 86 goals and 23 assists in 89 games, he left Dortmund in the summer having made outstanding contributions to the team. With 22 goals and three assists in 15 games, Haaland is already aiming to surpass those totals in England.
But Dortmund’s German-heavy defense was able to do something that nearly no other club can: keep Haaland quiet. Both teams advanced to the competition’s knockout rounds with a score of 0-0 in the match.
Post-match, the City manager was questioned on his decision to substitute Haaland. He said: “Three things, I saw him so tired. Second one, he had a bit of influenza in his body, like Joao (Cancelo), Joao played with a fever. And the third, he has a knock in his foot.”
BREAKING: Jurgen Klopp has been fined £30,000 for his red card against Manchester City - but the Liverpool boss has not been given a touchline ban.
