The unidentified footballer is currently being questioned in detention regarding an alleged attack that is believed to have happened last month.
The footballer was detained on Monday, Scotland Yard revealed in a statement to The Telegraph.
According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police, “a woman in her 20s was allegedly the victim of rape on July 4.”
The alleged rape reportedly took place in June 2022.
Police said, “At an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape, the guy was detained and put into jail where he remains.”
The message further stated that inquiries into the circumstances were still ongoing.
The players’ club was approached by The Telegraph but declined to comment on the arrest.
The Premier League season will start on August 5, thus it is unknown if the player will participate in his club’s preseason schedule.
The player, according to the article, was also scheduled to represent his nation at the World Cup in Qatar, which begins on November 21.
