Who is Alphonso Davies? The Left Back Who Caught Everyone's Attention

German Champions Bayern Munich dominated what was expected to be the best match in this year’s Champions League campaign by humiliating Barcelona with a scoreline of 8-2 in the quarter-finals. While Muller, Kimmich, Lewandowski, Coutinho found the net there was one teenager who stole the show single-handedly.

19-year old Canadian International, Alphonso Davies made his Bundesliga debut in 2019 and is the first Canadian international to play and score for Bayern. He proved out to be a generational talent setting himself upon the world stage against his idol ‘Lionel Messi’. He is now widely considered one of the best-left backs in the entire world. He has become a key player for Bayern Munich and Canada national team in no time. After blazing a trail through the St. Nicholas Soccer Academy and Edmonton Strikers as a kid, Davies was enrolled in the Vancouver Whitecaps’ residency program at 14 . His progress was rapid and, after becoming the youngest player to appear in the United Soccer League , he made history as the first player born in the 2000s to play in Major League Soccer . He was just 15 years, eight months and 15 days old . All told, he turned out 65 times in MLS, tallying eight goals and 12 assists - all before the age of 18.

He has represented his country in ** U17 and U20 level** when he was called up for the senior side, debuting against Curaçao on 14 June 2017. He went on to establish himself as The Canucks’ youngest ever goalscorer and the youngest to score at a Gold Cup with his brace against French Guiana, as well as the first player born in the 21st century to score at a major international tournament. He was Canada’s 2018 Player of the Year and the first player to score for Canada against USA since 2007 in the northern American neighbours’ CONCACAF Nations League.
