Presnel Kimpembe, a defender for Paris Saint-Germain, has been taken off France’s World Cup roster after struggling to heal from an injury.

The 27-year-old, who took part in Les Bleus’ successful 2018 campaign in Russia, has been forced to concede that he is not prepared to compete in the event. Didier Deschamps, the manager of the Les Bleus, has selected uncapped Monaco star Axel Disasi to fill a void in his defensive lineup.

A statement from the French Football Federation (FFF) read: “Presnel Kimpembe will not participate in the World Cup. The Paris-SG defender does not consider himself sufficiently recovered to be able to hold his place in the defense of the Blues in Qatar. This decision was taken this morning, in Clairefontaine, after an exchange between the player and the doctor of the French team, Dr. Franck Le Gall, then between the player and Didier Deschamps.

Cristiano Ronaldo was reportedly out of Portugal training as they prepare for their final World Cup group game against South Korea tomorrow.

The 37-year-old has made a strong start to this year’s tournament in Qatar, but it seems manager Fernando Santos will be without his talisman for the upcoming clash against South Korea.

It remains to be seen how serious this injury is, with little in the way of information given just yet about Ronaldo’s current fitness status.

Still, this is certainly slightly worrying news for Portugal as they’ll want to keep their all-time leading scorer fit ahead of the knockout stages of this competition.

According to David Ornstein, Callum Wilson and Declan Rice both missed training on Wednesday.

With Southgate opting to take just two out-and-out strikers to the tournament, England will be left with just Harry Kane if Wilson is unable to play on Saturday.

Rice has become a key player for England over the last few years, so losing him ahead of the quarter-finals would be catastrophic.

Hopefully, both players are missing training as a precautionary and will be fit enough to face France on Saturday night, with Sterling and White already likely to be out.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s 2022 World Cup semi-final, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni said that both players are available for selection but a decision is yet to be made on their involvement.

Scaloni said: “Post-matchday we worked on recovery.

“Both players (De Paul and Di Maria) are fit, we feel reassured about it.

“We need to think about how many minutes they can play. We have today and even tomorrow to make a decision, but as I understand, both are fit to play.”
