England vs Denmark

England have built their UEFA Euro 2020 campaign on the back of being the most solid unit in the competition. The Three Lions are yet to concede a goal in five matches so far and have gradually improved in the final third as well. Having not scored more than once in any of their three Group D fixtures, England first netted two past Germany before cruising to a 4-0 win over Ukraine last time out.

Denmark have been THE surprise package of UEFA Euro 2020. The Red and White made the worst possible start to the campaign, with their opener marred by Christian Eriksen’s health scare and a 1-0 defeat to Finland. A loss to Belgium meant Kasper Hjulmand & co. had it all to do. However, a 4-1 win over Russia sealed a place in the Round of 16, and subsequent victories against Wales and Czech Republic have set up the semi-final date with England.

Denmark were 1-0 victors the last time they faced England, with Christian Eriksen scoring the only goal in the UEFA Nations League tie at Wembley.

England vs Denmark team news

England reverted back to a four-man defence for the win over Ukraine but Gareth Southgate has been tipped to go with a three-man defence tonight with Kyle Walker in central defence and Kieran Trippier as right wing-back. Jadon Sancho was given a first start and impressed, so will hope to keep his place. Bukayo Saka and Jack Grealish are also pushing for a start, but Southgate could sacrifice an attacker for a defender.

Denmark were again unchanged as they beat Czech Republic and could do the same tonight.

Captain Simon Kjaer shook off a fitness doubt to start, while Yussuf Poulsen was fit but only made the bench as Kasper Dolberg started.

Only against Sweden (46) and Norway (21) have Denmark lost more games in their history than they have versus England (15) – W6 D5. However, England have won just one of their last six competitive meetings with Denmark (D3 L2), with that victory coming in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

All seven meetings between England and Denmark at Wembley have finished 1-0, with England winning five to Denmark’s two. Denmark have won their last two competitive games against England at the stadium (1983 and 2020), with no side ever winning three successive competitive ties versus the Three Lions at Wembley.

I really can’t see England beating Italy unless they really go for it and drop Phillips for another attacking player.

Italy are good on counter but would rather keep 5 back and let creative players test their backline.

Denmark’s record in penalty shootouts isn’t the best, though they haven’t been involved in as many shootouts as other nations at Euro 2020.

UEFA has invited Christian Eriksen, his wife and the paramedics who helped save his life to the Wembley final on Sunday. What a story it would be if Denmark were one of the teams.

Paramedic Peder Ersgaard is quoted in Fagbladet FOA: "I’m as excited as a child on Christmas Eve. I’m very proud of myself and the whole team. It wasn’t a one-man effort.”
