Spinazzola snapped his achilles tendon and could be out for up to 12 months according to @adriandelmonte.
Wishing him a speedy recovery. He lit up Euro 2020
Denmark have had a roller-coaster campaign in Euro 2020 so far. Their tournament started with Christian Eriksen’s tragic collapse and back-to-back defeats to Finland and Belgium. However, an inspiring 4-0 victory over Russia saw them clinch second place in Group B out of nowhere.
The Danish dynamites were also the most dominating team in the Round of 16, comfortably beating Wales 4-0 at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Czech Republic are not an opposition to be taken lightly, though, having beaten the Netherlands in the Round of 16. One may argue that they got a bit lucky with the dismissal of Matthijs de Ligt, but a tireless all-round performance meant they were the clear victors in Hungary.
Jaroslav Silhavy’s men only progressed to the knockout stages as one of the four best third-placed teams in the competition. But their performance in the last round suggests they are capable of advancing further than the quarter-finals.
Jan Boril is back for Czech Republic after completing his ban and he could earn a starting role against Denmark in the crucial encounter. For Denmark, Yussuf Poulsen, Daniel Wass and Simon Kjaer have all returned after recovering and that is a huge boost ahead of the knockout game.
Five of the last six matches between the Czech Republic and Denmark have ended as draws, including their most recent encounter in a November 2016 friendly. The other game in this run was a 3-0 Denmark win in a March 2013 World Cup qualifier.
With a 4-1 victory against Russia and a 4-0 victory against Wales, Denmark became the first team in European Championship history to score four plus goals in consecutive games in the competition. They have nine goals so far at Euro O 2020, only scoring more in a major tournament in the 1986 World Cup (10).
This is the Czech Republic’s fourth European Championship quarter-final, progressing from two of the previous three (1996 vs Portugal, 2004 vs Denmark) but failing the last time they reached this stage in 2012, losing 1-0 to Portugal.
Denmark are averaging 18.8 shots and 7.3 shots on target per game so far at EURO 2020. Both are their highest numbers on record at a single edition at a major tournament (since 1966 - World Cup and EURO).
Mikkel Damsgaard has been directly involved in seven goals in his six appearances for Denmark in all competitions, scoring three and assisting four. Damsgaard created more chances than any other Danish player in their 4-0 victory against Wales in the last round (three).
Ukraine made it to the knockout stages of UEFA Euro 2020 by the skin of their teeth but produced a spirited performance in the Round of 16 to get the better of Sweden, who had topped Group E to reach the stage. Andriy Schevchenko’s men prevailed in the dying embers of extra-time, with Artem Dovbyk scoring the late winner.
England, on the other hand, seem to have grown in confidence and cohesion with every passing game, although they are still not performing to potential. Even so, the Three Lions have by far the best defensive record in the competition, having kept a clean sheet in each of their four games so far. And after topping Group D, Gareth Southgate & co. produced a marvellous performance to beat Germany 2-0 last time out.
England and Ukraine played out a goalless draw the last time they faced off against each other, in a FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying fixture back in 2013.
England are expected to revert to a back four in Rome.
Southgate will check on the fitness of Bukayo Saka, who has a “slight knock”, which could open the door to Jadon Sancho to make his first start of the tournament.
Mason Mount is hoping for a recall after returning from isolation and Jack Grealish will be hoping his cameo against Germany will be enough to earn him a start.
Ukraine striker Artem Besedin has been ruled out of the remainder of the Euros with suspected cruciate ligament damage in his left knee suffered during a wild red-card challenge from Sweden defender Marcus Danielson at Hampden Park on Tuesday.
Saturday’s encounter will be the eighth meeting between Ukraine and England. The Blue and Yellow have only managed one win over England to date, with the Three Lions managing four victories (D2).
England are currently on a ten-match unbeaten run across all competitions, winning nine of those fixtures (D1).
More impressively, England have kept a clean sheet in 13 of the 17 fixtures they have played since the resumption of international football last year, including each of the last six.
This is Ukraine’s second game at Stadio Olimpico, the first a 2-0 loss to Italy in a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier in October 2006. Their record in Italy is W2 D1 L2; their last visit ended in a 1-1 friendly draw against Italy in October 2018 in which Ruslan Malinovskyi scored his first goal for Ukraine.
This is England’s fifth game at Stadio Olimpico (W2 D1 L1), where they beat the Soviet Union 2-0 in that third-place play-off at the 1968 UEFA European Championship. Their last visit to Rome was a 0-0 draw against Italy in October 1997, a result that booked their place at the following year’s World Cup.
