Hungary vs France

Hungary put in a valiant effort in their opening fixture at UEFA Euro 2020, admirably keeping the formidable Portugal side at bay for the most part. However, a late collapse proved to be their undoing, as three goals in quick succession condemned Marco Rossi & co. to [an undeserving 3-0 defeat, ending their 11-game unbeaten run in the process.

France, on the other hand, were thoroughly professional in their maiden game at UEFA Euro 2020, comfortably keeping out Germany throughout the course of the 90 minutes, although they were fortunate to win the game with the help of a Mats Hummels own goal. Les Bleus are now on an eight-game run without defeat, dating back to November 2020.

France were 2-1 winners the last time they locked horns with Hungary, in an international friendly back in 2005. Ahead of the latest meeting between the two sides, The Hard Tackle takes a closer look at the encounter.

France have won each of their last five matches in all competitions, doing so without letting in a goal. Les Bleus have not won six games in a row since June 2016, when the last two matches in that run were their first two outings at UEFA Euro 2016.

Portugal vs Germany

A defeat for Germany could diminish their hopes of securing a top-two finish, providing France do win their game against Hungary. Die Mannschaft , therefore, will have to live at the mercy of other nations in the hopes of securing a place in the next round as four of the best third-placed teams.

Widely tagged as among the favourites with France, Italy and Spain, Portugal started the tournament with a 3-0 win over Hungary. The result, though, perhaps flattered them as they were far from clinical and had to rely on two deflections to score the opener late in the game.

The defending champions will need to be much more clinical as they take on a strong German team determined to get back to winning ways after the loss to France.

Rafa Silva will be pushing to start after coming off the bench against Hungary to provide an assist for the first goal and win a penalty, whilst Diogo Jota was wasteful with his chances and may be dropped in favour of Andre Silva.

Low also has plenty of options to choose from and having left the likes of Leroy Sane and Timo Werner on the bench for the France game, the manager may decide to shuffle his pack against Portugal.

Hungary vs France | 9 am ET

France will try to get their second Euro 2020 win against Hungary in Budapest after a solid performance against Germany (1-0) in their opening match in Group F.

The hosts, who lost 3-0 to Portugal in their first game, will have a hard task against the big favorites to win the tournament, as they need to get a positive result if they want to stand a chance to advance to the knockout stages.

Hungary’s 11-game unbeaten streak across all competitions ended at the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo & Co., but Marco Rossi’s squad showed they can surprise the ‘big teams’, as Portugal were unable to score until the 84th minute, after Szabolcs Schon had a goal ruled out for offside.

France have now won five matches in a row with five clean sheets and Italy is the only European squad to boast more clean sheets than Didier Deschamps’ men since the turn of the year.

Moreover, France go into the match on a five-match winning streak against Hungary, who haven’t defeated Les Bleus since 1976.

AS English prediction: Hungary 0-2 France

Venue: Ferenc Puskás, Budapest, Hungary

Kick-off time: 9am ET, 6am PT, 3pm CEST

Portugal vs Germany | 12 noon ET

Portugal will be aiming to book a ticket to the next round of the competition when they face Germany in Munich on Saturday evening.

Fernando Santos’ squad beat Hungary in the opening game of the group, as expected, while Germany, who were defeated by France, will have to play at their best to get a positive result that will keep them in the fight for a spot in the round of 16.

A Seleçao grabbed the three points thanks to a late Raphael Guerreiro opener before Cristiano Ronaldo came up with a double to become the all-time leading goalscorer in the tournament’s history.

Portugal seem to be quite comfortable in the European Championship, as they reached the semi-finals in 1984, 2000 and 2012, while they were present in the final eight of Euro 1996 and Euro 2008. They were also runners-up on home soil at Euro 2004 and are the titleholders, having beaten France 1-0 in the final of Euro 2016.

Santos’s team are now on a seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions, but they have lost their last four international matches against Germany, who will try to qualify for the round of 16 for the fourth consecutive time after failing to make it out of the group stage in 2000 and 2004.

AS English prediction: Portugal 1-1 Germany

Venue: Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany

Kick-off time: 12 noon ET, 9am PT, 6pm CEST
