England come into the tournament only as one of the outside contenders to go all the way instead of resounding favourites, and that is largely down to the Three Lions flattering to deceive despite boasting world class individuals in every department. This was evident in their UEFA Euro 2020 opener against Croatia, as they only managed a 1-0 win despite dominating the proceedings.
Scotland, on the other hand, began their UEFA Euro 2020 campaign with a disappointing defeat at home. Playing hosts to Czech Republic at Hampden Park, the Tartan Army went down 2-0 despite the best efforts of captain Andrew Robertson, who has created the most chances in a game by any player so far in the tournament.
The last clash featuring the two neighbours ended in a 2-2 draw in a FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifier, with Harry Kane among those on target.
Dean Henderson has withdrawn from the squad as he struggles with a hip problem, while Harry Maguire will face a late fitness test as he recovers from an ankle ligament injury.
Kieran Tierney will be hoping to start after missing the opener against the Czech Republic due to a long-standing calf injury, with Che Adams also pushing for a place in the line-up following his positive impact from the bench at Hampden Park.
England and Scotland have previously faced each other 114 times, in what is the oldest rivalry in world football. The 115th meeting, though, will only be their second-ever clash at a major international competition, with England running out 2-0 winners in the previous match-up back in UEFA Euro 1996.
Scotland have won only one of their last 11 fixtures against England (D2 L8), in a UEFA Euro qualifier in November 1999. Meanwhile, the four games played between the neighbouring nations this century have produced 16 goals (11 for England, 5 for Scotland), an average of four goals per game.
England have won each of their last seven fixtures in all competitions, keeping a clean sheet in six of those outings.
A disappointing 1-0 defeat to England has raised question marks over Croatia’s quality in the ongoing European Championship. The 2018 World Cup finalists were far from competent and now run the risk of potentially bowing out of the top two contention in Group D as they take on the Czech Republic on Friday. It is a must-win game for Zlatko Dalic’s men, especially following Czechia’s win over Scotland in the opening fixture.
Czech Republic, however, are not an opposition to be taken lightly, as they showed in the opening matchday. They were not exactly dominant against the Scottish team but showcased excellent attacking prowess and the defensive solidity that could trouble the Croatia team.
The win over Scotland also saw one of Euro’s best ever goals when Patrik Schick found the back of the net from over 50 yards. The spirits, therefore, will be high in Czechia camp while their opponents are licking their wounds from the disappointing defeat to England.
The likes of Josip Brekalo and Nikola Vlasic will be pushing to start after impressing off the bench against England, whilst Dejan Lovren is in line to return after missing that defeat through injury.
After a strong performance against Scotland, Silhavy may opt to stick with the same XI for this clash.
