Match Preview: FC Porto Vs Chelsea

Chelsea will aim to return to winning ways after their humbling defeat to West Bromwich Albion when they travel to Seville for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Porto on Wednesday.

The ‘hosts’ overcame Juventus in thrilling fashion to book their place in the last eight, while Chelsea dumped Atletico Madrid out of the tournament in the last 16.

Sergio Conceicao’s side were rewarded for their efforts with a spot in the quarter-finals for just the fourth time in the past 16 seasons, and they have never advanced past this stage of the tournament since Jose Mourinho took them all the way in the 2003-04 campaign - losing to Liverpool in the last eight during the 2018-19 season.

The Blues eased to a 3-0 aggregate success over Atletico to book their spot in the quarter-finals, and they have scored 11 goals and conceded just one in their four away victories in the tournament this season, but the 2013-14 season represents the last time that Chelsea managed to progress past the quarter-final stage.

Furthermore, Chelsea have come out on top in five of their eight Champions League meetings with Porto since 2004, and the most recent battle between the two clubs ended in a 2-0 home win for the Blues during the 2015-16 group stage.

Chelsea will have Christian Pulisic and N’Golo Kante fit after hamstring issues for Wednesday’s first-leg last-eight clash with Porto.

Thomas Tuchel confirmed Tammy Abraham will also be in the squad, though Kante is unlikely to start after his latest muscle complaint.

Porto will take on Chelsea without their suspended two top goalscorers, Sergio Oliveira and Mehdi Taremi, for Wednesday’s match in Seville.

In the Champions League, players are suspended for the next match after three cautions, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh etc).

Following victories in both legs against Atlético Madrid in the Round of 16, Thomas Tuchel could become just the second Chelsea manager to win his first three games in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League. The previous manager to do this was Roberto Di Matteo in 2011-12, the last time Chelsea won the competition.

Match Preview: Bayern Vs PSG

Reigning champions Bayern Munich prepare to take on old foes and last season’s beaten finalists Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

Nearly eight months have passed since Kingsley Coman propelled Bayern to European glory with a 1-0 win over PSG in the 2019-20 final, and the two giants head into this game following contrasting fortunes in their domestic ventures.

Les Parisiens had fallen at the last-16 stage three seasons in a row between 2016 and 2019 before their unsuccessful venture last year, but with a mere two wins to boast from their last five games across all competitions, Pochettino’s side need an immediate injection of confidence before their short trip to Bavaria.

Incredibly, Bayern’s 1-0 win over PSG in the 2019-20 final represents the only time that the French champions have failed to find the back of the net in their last 43 Champions League matches, and with both Neymar and Mbappe equally desperate to conquer Europe, not even Flick’s defence may be able to contain two of Europe’s brightest attackers this week.

However, PSG have already faced the reigning European champions twice before, and on both occasions they lost, with AC Milan sending them packing in the 1994-95 semi-finals before Real Madrid came up trumps in their last-16 battle during the 2017-18 season.
