Tottenham v West Brom: Match Preview, Team News & Stats

opposing-managers-jose-mourinho-the-manager-of-chelsea-and-sam-the-picture-id465224076

Thursday’s 1-0 loss to former club Chelsea has increased the pressure on Mourinho, who has faced criticism for recent results and his pragmatic style of play.

The North London outfit are now seven points adrift of the top four, albeit with a game in hand to play on Liverpool in that final Champions League qualification spot.

After suffering back-to-back home losses for the first time in his managerial career, Mourinho will see this visit of West Brom as the ideal chance to stop the rot.

The Baggies have themselves struggled for points of late, collecting just one from the last 12 on offer - a 2-2 draw with Fulham last week.

Albion followed that up with a 2-1 loss to bottom side Sheffield United, however, and they are now 10 points from safety, having played a game more than 17th-placed Burnley.

Sam Allardyce’s appointment has not had the desired impact, the Baggies having conceded 26 league goals in nine matches under the experienced manager - as many as they shipped in 13 games under Slaven Bilic.

West Brom have won just one of their last 14 away games against Spurs in all competitions - a 1-0 victory at White Hart Lane in September 2014.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is still likely to be without Harry Kane for the game against West Brom.

The England captain has missed the last two games with an ankle injury but is back in training.

Dele Alli (tendon), Giovani Lo Celso (hamstring) and Sergio Reguilon (muscle) will all miss out as Spurs try and arrest a three-game losing run.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, signed on loan from Arsenal on deadline day, makes a swift return to north London for his West Brom debut.

Turkey midfielder Okay Yokuslu, another loan arrival from Celta Vigo, could be on the bench after his work visa was processed and he arrived at the Albion training ground on Friday.

Grady Diangana is closing in on a return to the matchday squad after being out for five weeks with hamstring trouble.

Tottenham are looking to record their first league double over West Bromwich Albion since the 2011/12 season under manager Harry Redknapp.

West Brom have won just one of their last 14 away games against Spurs in all competitions (D6 L7), a 1-0 win in September 2014 at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham have lost just one of their last 26 Premier League home games against promoted clubs (W23 D2), going down 1-3 against Wolves in December 2018.

Since a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace in August 2016, West Brom are winless in their last 11 Premier League games in London (D2 L9). The Baggies have lost each of their last five top-flight games in the capital, conceding at least twice each time.

In the past five seasons (including 2020-21), Tottenham have lost just two of their 28 Premier League games against sides starting the day in the relegation zone (W20 D6), with those defeats coming against West Brom (May 2018) and Newcastle (August 2019).

Wolverhampton Vs Leicester City: Match Preview, Team News & Stats

Leicester collected just one point from games against Everton and Leeds United, putting the pressure on Brendan Rodgers and his squad ahead of the trip to Fulham on Wednesday evening.

Despite being hindered by a number of selection issues, the Foxes were able to claim a 2-0 win in West London, moving the club above champions Liverpool.

With leaders Manchester City squaring off against Liverpool later on Sunday, Rodgers knows that there is a window of opportunity to heap the pressure on each of those clubs.

Counterpart Nuno Espirito Santo has been facing pressure of a different kind with Wolves’ focus now on avoiding any kind of a relegation scrap.

Although Wolves were less than convincing against Arsenal on Tuesday night, the 2-1 win ended the club’s run of eight matches without a victory.

Ahead of games against Leicester, Southampton and Leeds United, Nuno will acknowledge that his players must find a way to build on their success against the Gunners.

Wolves head coach Nuno Espirito Santo revealed he has several “problems” in terms of team selection for Sunday’s Premier League visit of Leicester.

Nuno would not be drawn into naming any new absentees but his injury list is already fairly lengthy.

Rayan Ait-Nouri (abductor), Marcal (groin), Jonny (knee) and Romain Saiss (knock) all missed the 2-1 win over Arsenal and are unlikely to be back in time to face the Foxes, while Raul Jimenez (fractured skull) is a long-term absentee.

Jamie Vardy is available for Leicester after recovering from a groin operation.

Boss Brendan Rodgers insists he will not rush the striker back into action but he will be in the squad at Molineux while Wilfred Ndidi (thigh) is a doubt.

Wes Morgan (back), Timothy Castagne (hamstring), Dennis Praet (thigh) and Wesley Fofana (thigh) are out.

Wolves have failed to score in five of their seven Premier League matches against Leicester but have won the two they have scored in by a 4-3 scoreline in both 2003/04 and 2018/19, coming from three goals down to win in October 2003.

Leicester have won just two of their last 19 away matches against Wolves in all competitions (D7 L10), with their last win at Molineux coming in December 2006 in a Championship meeting.

Wolves are looking to record consecutive Premier League victories for only the second time this season, winning against Fulham and Leeds in October.

Leicester have won eight of their 11 Premier League away games so far this season (D2 L1), with the Foxes only winning more on the road in a season in the competition in their title campaign of 2015-16 (11).

Since the start of the 2018/19 season, only Manchester United (47) and Liverpool (45) have won more points from losing positions in the Premier League than Wolves (44), who came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 against Arsenal last time out.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Match Preview, Team News & Stats

josep-guardiola-manager-of-manchester-city-looks-on-during-the-picture-id630670470

So often in recent seasons this has been the fixture to have the biggest impact on the title race and, while there are more teams also in contention this time around, it could once again be a pivotal showdown.

It is arguably more important to Liverpool than Man City, though, with the visitors’ recent form giving them some margin for error, whereas Liverpool’s untimely slump has left them with a mountain to climb already.

A run of just two wins in their last eight Premier League outings has left Jurgen Klopp’s side seven points adrift of the leaders having played a game more, and should that gap grow to 10 - or even stay at seven - this weekend then it is difficult to see them making up the deficit over the remainder of the season.

Sunday’s contest may well fall into the must-win category as far as Liverpool’s title hopes are concerned, then, although Klopp has been quick to insist that his side cannot be focused on the title, but rather on their top-four chances.

The champions could have been knocked out of the Champions League places by the time they kick off on Sunday and are now as close to eighth-placed Tottenham Hotspur as they are to their table-topping visitors this weekend.

On paper that may look like the most likely scenario against a Man City side in such good form, but Liverpool’s recent problems have come against teams that have packed men behind the ball and limited the space - something Guardiola is unlikely to do.

There should therefore be more space for Liverpool to operate in and, given the champions’ poor form against the bottom six so far this season, there is logic to suggest that victory over a team like Man City would actually be more likely than one over Brighton at the moment.

Certainly, the hosts will be confident of carving out more goalscoring chances in an open game, although it is difficult to ignore the fact that they are still yet to find the back of the net at Anfield in 2021 - a run of 348 minutes without a goal.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hopes to have Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Sadio Mane back for the visit of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

The Reds’ goalkeeper missed the midweek defeat by Brighton due to illness, while Fabinho and Mane have sat out recent matches with muscle injuries.

New defensive signing Ozan Kabak is eligible for the squad but it seems unlikely Klopp will throw him straight in for such an important match.

Man City are still without record goalscorer Sergio Aguero and playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

Aguero continues to build up his fitness in training after a spell out with coronavirus while De Bruyne is absent with a hamstring injury.

Defender Nathan Ake also remains on the sidelines with a muscular problem.

Liverpool have lost one of their last 29 home league matches against Manchester City (W19 D9), a 2-1 defeat in May 2003.

The away side has won just one of the last 24 Premier League meetings between Liverpool and Man City, with Liverpool winning 4-1 at the Etihad in November 2015.

Manchester City have won four of their last five league visits to the Premier League reigning champions (L1), beating Man Utd in 2011/12 and 2013/14 & Chelsea in 2015/16 and 2017/18. However, City have never won at Anfield when Liverpool have been reigning top-flight champion in 14 attempts (D4 L10).

Manchester City have conceded just 13 goals in 21 Premier League games this season, keeping a clean sheet in each of their last six. They’ve never previously kept seven consecutive clean sheets in the competition.

Sheffield United Vs Chelsea: Match Preview, Team News & Stats

Jorginho’s first-half penalty, awarded for Eric Dier’s challenge on Timo Werner, proved enough for Chelsea to pick up a deserved victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That first away win under Tuchel added to their 2-0 victory over Burnley and 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers - a seven-point return that the Blues can be happy with.

Perhaps most impressive of all, Chelsea have kept their opponents quiet in all three of those games and have yet to concede.

Indeed, Tuchel is the first Blues boss since Jose Mourinho’s first spell 17 years ago to keep a clean sheet in his first three matches in charge of the club.

However, after a disappointing end to Frank Lampard’s tenure, the West London outfit are still playing catch-up on the sides above them.

Chelsea sit sixth in the table heading into the weekend’s fixtures, four points behind fourth-placed Liverpool and a further seven points adrift of leaders Manchester City, who also have a game in hand.

Tuchel will just be hoping to keep putting wins on the board before focus switches to the cup competitions, with Barnsley and Atletico Madrid to come in the last 16 of the FA Cup and Champions League respectively.

Ben Osborn is expected to return to the Sheffield United squad when the Blades host Chelsea on Sunday.

The versatile 26-year-old has missed the last five matches through injury but he resumed full training this week and should be available.

Enda Stevens (calf) remains a doubt and George Baldock will be assessed after a knock forced him off in the win against West Brom in midweek, while Chelsea loanee Ethan Ampadu cannot face his parent club.

Chelsea are likely to be without Thiago Silva for the trip north.

The Brazilian defender came off during the first half of Thursday’s 1-0 win over Tottenham with a muscle injury and is a big doubt.

Kai Havertz and Kurt Zouma both missed the London derby victory with niggles, but could recover to feature at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United have won three of their four home Premier League matches against Chelsea (L1), winning twice in 1993 and 3-0 last season.

None of the last 15 league meetings between Sheffield United and Chelsea at Bramall Lane have ended as a draw (nine Sheffield United wins, six Chelsea wins).

Chelsea have lost just one of their last 23 Premier League matches against sides from Yorkshire (W17 D5), though it came in their trip to Bramall Lane last season.

West Ham and Tottenham have already won away at Sheffield United this season - the last league campaign to see three London clubs win at Bramall Lane was back in 1990-91, with Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Wimbledon doing so.

Sheffield United have won five of their last seven games in all competitions (L2), as many as they did in their previous 32 (W5 D6 L21).

Sheffield United have won two of their last three home league games (L1), netting as many goals in these three games as they had in their previous nine at Bramall Lane (4).

Chelsea have won 10 of their last 12 Premier League games against sides starting the day bottom, with the exceptions being a 1-2 loss at Crystal Palace (October 2017) and a 3-3 draw with West Brom (September 2020).
