Arsenal vs Burnley

The Gunners will be hoping to get back on track after the defeat to Liverpool and secure three points against a struggling Burnley side at the Emirates. Clinching three points is essential for Arteta as it would keep Arsenal firmly in the race for a top-four finish alongside Tottenham, West Ham United and Manchester United.

Burnley have had a disruptive last month and a half due to a coronavirus outbreak. Most of their games were postponed, and between December 12 and this weekend, they have played just four matches in all competitions. The Clarets have not taken to the pitch since their FA Cup exit to Huddersfield Town earlier this month.

Ideally, nothing short of a win should do for Burnley, as their only hope of getting out of the relegation zone is through victories in the league. However, considering they have won just a single game all season and none away from home, it is difficult to see them achieve an improbable result against an Arsenal side who have been formidable at the Emirates.

Arsenal vs Burnley team news

Arsenal will have to contend without Thomas Partey, who was sent off for two yellow cards after coming on as a substitute.

Fellow midfielder Granit Xhaka is also suspended, while Mohamed Elneny is away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

That means Albert Sambi Lokonga will once again be charged with having to be the main man in the middle of the park.

“We have to go day by day,” said Arteta. “There are different reasons why they are not here with us and I will assess it.

Burnley haven’t scored more than once in any of their last 17 meetings with Arsenal in all competitions, since a 2-0 League Cup victory in December 2008. Only three teams have had longer runs without scoring more than one goal against the Gunners - Manchester City (25 between 1991 and 2008), Sheffield United (21, ongoing since 1992), and Wolves (20 between 1980 and 2018).

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka has been directly involved in a goal in each of his last five Premier League games, scoring four and assisting two in these matches. If he registers a goal or assist in this match, he’d be the youngest to do so in six consecutive appearances in the competition’s history (20 years 140 days).

Martin Odegaard has been involved in six goals in his last seven Premier League appearances for Arsenal (3 goals, 3 assists), two more than he had in his first 25 games in the competition (2 goals, 2 assists).

Chelsea vs Tottenham

From being at the top of the table at the start of December, Chelsea have quickly dropped out of the title picture as they find themselves in third place, 12 points shy of leaders Manchester City who also have a game in hand. The Blues are without a win in their previous four league matches, most recently being held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion.

Tottenham, on the other hand, have enjoyed a positive turnaround since Antonio Conte took over the reins. The Lilywhites are in fifth place currently, just a point behind West Ham United in fourth and have played fewer games than all their top-four rivals, which puts them in an advantageous position in the race for the Champions League spots.

Chelsea vs Tottenham team news

Eric Dier is back in contention for Spurs, although Heung-min Son continues to miss out.

Chelsea have been given a major boost by the return of Trevoh Chalobah and Reece James to training – but neither will be ready to face Tottenham in Sunday’s crunch clash.

Both players have been out in recent weeks with hamstring problems, which has stretched Thomas Tuchel’s squad to the limit during their punishing schedule.

Chalobah is expected to be back in action after the upcoming mid-season break, while James is also closing in on a return.
