Allardyce enjoys first win as ‘tough love’ pays off

West Bromwich Albion manager Sam Allardyce said he was pleased with his squad’s resilience after they came from behind to win 3-2 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday.

Wolves led 2-1 at halftime but a fine display in the second half allowed West Brom to score twice in four minutes to take all three points, giving Allardyce his first victory at the club and keeping his unbeaten record against Wolves intact.

Sheffield United v Tottenham: Match Preview, Team News and Stats

Sheffield United looked much more like their 2019-20 selves in claiming a first win of the league season against an admittedly dismal Newcastle in midweek and Chris Wilder will hope that continues on Sunday against a Tottenham side they took four points off last season. Spurs need to pull themselves out of a mini-slump – one win in six has stalled their Champions League push and they have not won away in the league since early November.

Team news

Sheffield United’s injury problems are showing little signs of easing as they prepare to host Tottenham. He did not name names, but Blades boss Chris Wilder expects to be without seven players for the game on Sunday.

George Baldock, Enda Stevens, Jack Rodwell and Oli McBurnie were among those absent in midweek as United earned their first Premier League win of the season against Newcastle. Lys Mousset was on the bench for that game despite nursing a knock.
Sander Berge (toe) and Jack O’Connell (knee) remain long-term absentees.

Tottenham are missing only Giovani Lo Celso for the trip north. Lo Celso is battling a hamstring injury which is set to keep him out until next month.

Opta Stats

Sheffield United have lost just two of their last 11 top-flight matches against Spurs (W5 D4), avoiding defeat in both matches last season (W1 D1).

Spurs are winless in their last seven away league matches against Sheffield United (D3 L4) since a 2-1 win in December 1975.

Sheffield United have won consecutive games in all competitions, after going 21 matches without a win beforehand (D3 L18).

After scoring 13 goals and winning their first four away league games this season, Spurs are winless in their last four on the road (D3 L1), netting just three goals in that run.

The two other teams to go as many as 17 games winless from the start of a top-flight season - Burnley in 1889/90 and Bolton in 1902/03 - both registered back-to-back wins after winning the first games of their seasons, as Sheffield United could achieve here.

Sheffield United are looking to become the first side to win in consecutive Premier League matches when starting the day in bottom place since West Bromwich Albion in April/May 2018.

Manchester United v Liverpool: Match Preview, Team News and Stats

Five days after reaching the Premier League summit comes the truest test of Manchester United’s ability to stay there. Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side are unbeaten in 15 away league games since losing at Liverpool almost exactly one year ago and will go six points clear of them should they inflict a first home league defeat on the champions since April 2017. Liverpool have dipped in recent weeks but will have no better incentive to rediscover their verve than puncturing the optimism of their great rivals in Klopp’s 200th league game in charge of Liverpool.

Liverpool have the best Premier League home record this season - and are unbeaten in their last 67 league matches at Anfield - while Man Utd have the best away record in the division.

Surely “don’t lose” will be the message rather than going all out to win it for both teams, especially in the Manchester United dressing room. A draw will be a huge result for them. If the game gets to 60-65 minutes and is all square, we could see a repeat of what happened in Man City vs Liverpool, where both were happy with a point.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will assess Joel Matip in training before deciding whether to start him against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

The centre-back has missed three matches with a groin problem but is back with the squad. If he is not ready, Klopp will have to choose between youngster Rhys Williams or Nat Phillips.

Midfielder Naby Keita remains sidelined with a muscle problem which has kept him out since December 19.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will give players the chance to prove their fitness before the trip to Anfield.

Anthony Martial picked up an apparent hamstring complaint in Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Burnley and is among those that will be given Saturday’s training session to get themselves match ready.

Solskjaer confirmed the only definite injury absentees would be defenders Brandon Williams and Phil Jones.

Liverpool vs Manchester United :fire:

The biggest fixture in the English calendar will take on even more significance this weekend when champions Liverpool host new Premier League leaders Manchester United at Anfield.

The two most successful clubs in the history of English football currently occupy the top two positions in the table, separated by only three points heading into this mouth-watering Merseyside meeting.

A run of 29 points from the last 33 on offer has seen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side brush off a slow start to the campaign and soar to the top of the Premier League table, with Tuesday’s 1-0 triumph over Burnley lifting them three points above the champions and Sunday’s hosts.

It is the first time Man United have been top after as many as 17 games of a season since Sir Alex Ferguson led them to their 20th title in 2012-13, a tally Liverpool moved back to within one of with their triumph last season.

Jorgen Klopp’s side have picked up two points from their last three games and could go four without a victory for the first time since February 2017, having been held by West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United before losing at Southampton last time out.

Remarkably, Liverpool have never lost back-to-back league games under Klopp, last doing so in September 2015 under Brendan Rodgers when the second match in that run was a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Man United. Klopp himself has not overseen successive league defeats since April 2015, during his time in charge of Borussia Dortmund.

Since scoring seven goals from eight shots on target in their obliteration of Crystal Palace on December 19, Liverpool have since only managed seven shots on target combined from their next three games, scoring just once in the process.

The only obvious weakness in that Liverpool side right now is their CB pairings. Virgil Van Dijk’s absence has been felt greatly by Liverpool, Coupled with injuries to other center Back’s in the team.

Fabinho and Henderson has frequently been used in that position though, but we all know they ain’t natural CB’s. If both can be at their Best today, Liverpool could take all points. :+1:
