Much has been made of Ol

e Gunnar Solskjaer’s tactical decision making this season. But on this there can be no doubt: if he starts with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford on the bench, he has a considerable weapon at his disposal.

Earlier this season, when his Manchester United team entertained RB Leipzig, the two came on in the second half, Fernandes ran the game and Rashford scored a hat-trick. As warnings go, it could not have been more clear for David Moyes the moment he read his opponents’s team sheet: Fernandes and Rashford were going to start this one on the sidelines. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

What he needed was for his players to begin like a train and seize unbreachable advantage before the pair could be introduced. And he would have been encouraged by the fact that, shorn of their two most effective performers, the visitors began the first half giving every appearance of having overdosed on sleeping pills on the coach down from Manchester. Sluggish, slow, barely able to string two passes together, they were a wretched parody of the side that achieved such a spirited comeback at St Mary’s just a week earlier.

What a delightful 45 minutes unfurled for the two thousand supporters, dotted in vertical lines across the Billy Bonds stand, who were the first to watch a West Ham game in 10 months. Doing their best to generate an atmosphere in a stadium which can echo like a mausoleum even when full, a throaty chorus of I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles greeted the home team as they emerged.

And as soon as things started, with the visitors strolling and West Ham biting, those lucky enough to be in attendance quickly grew ever more vocal. When Paul Pogba haplessly miscontrolled the ball right in front of where they were seated, how they loved the chance to unleash a hearty hoot of derision. This side of a goal, there is nothing a fan enjoys more than an expensively acquired opponent fumbling. And how often, as the half progressed, were they gifted the chance to sneer. Aaron Wan Bissake was closed down several times by Pablo Fornals, Anthony Martial, who spent 45 minutes losing every single personal challenge, must have represented the least tricky challenge Fabian Balbuena has faced all season, while Donny van de Beek was barely evident.

The swell of noise only grew as Moyes’s side, full of intent, began pinging crosses into the visitors box. Within five minutes, Dean Henderson was obliged to save with his chest from Fornals. Jarrold Bowen then broke, and put the ball beyond Henderson into the net but was ruled offside.

Bowen by now had the measure of the visitor’s back line. After wriggling past Scott McTominay and Alex Telles, he crossed and there was Fornals at the far post. He had time, he had space, but he put his header firmly into the side netting. It was a warning Solskjaer’s side they didn’t seem anxious to take. With Fernandes on the bench they seemed bereft of creativity or purpose. And how West Ham were relishing their opponents’ dawdling. Fornals hit the post toe-poking through the defence after Bowen, yet again, caused issues by drifting across the front of the Manchester backline and floated a cross into the middle.

Proper justice was delivered when, from Aaron Cresswell’s corner, Declan Rice flicked on and Thomas Soucek, who had wandered from the middle to the far post with no-one tracking him, scooped the ball into the net. Caught on their heels, the United defence vainly appealed for offside. Sebastien Haller should have doubled the lead moments later after he was allowed to control a bouncing ball without anything approaching a challenge, strolled forward, eased past Henderson and seemed certain to score. But he fell over his own feet before he could put his shot away.

Solskjaer reacted to the indolence by sending on his two talismen. And how Moyes, whose side have lost more points from winning positions than any other in the Premier League this season, must have feared what might be the result of first-half profligacy. Not least because no other team has gained more points from a losing position this season than Manchester United.

With Rashford causing immediate alarm in the West Ham defence, and Fernandes doing something his team mates had failed to do in the first half — passing to a player wearing the same colour shirt — United began to ease back into the game. First Rashford set up McTominay, who spanked a shot into the side netting. Then Fernandes laid an invitation of a pass to Pogba who sent a nerveless 25 yard shot beyond Fabianski. It was a glorious goal, albeit one not immediately to be celebrated after the video assistant referee had to check whether Henderson’s long clearance down the line that was picked up by Fernandes, had, in fact strayed out of play. It had not.

Minutes later Fernandes set up Mason Greenwood, who spun on the penalty spot and sent a delightful left foot shot into the corner of the goal. At which point Moyes’s head sank towards his chest, his every fear had come to pass.

But worse was to come. Fernandes sent Rashford galloping forward with a consummate pass. He hit the post. The relief was not to last long. When Solskjaer’s third substitute Juan Mata sent him away, this time Rashford delicately chipped the ball over Fabianski into the net.

By now the 2,000 were reduced to angry shouts: at the referee, at their own players, at Moyes. For Solskjaer there was only vindication. And the ninth victory on the road on the bounce. He knows what to do if he wants to achieve another in Leipzig on Tuesday: start with Fernandes and Rashford on the bench.

Match preview: Tottenham vs Arsenal

A significant weekend of Premier League action is headlined on Sunday by the North London derby as Tottenham Hotspur host bitter rivals Arsenal

Two thousand supporters will be back in the stadium for the contest and they will hope to see their top-of-the-table Spurs side inflict more misery on their out-of-form neighbours.

Spurs fans could not have picked a better game than the North London derby for which to make their return to the magnificent Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - not only due to the magnitude of the match, but also due to the contrasting form of both sides.

Only 2,000 of the 62,303 seats will be filled, but those lucky enough to have tickets will be expecting to see their side come away with bragging rights against an Arsenal side in abject league form.

The Gunners have enough of their own problems to focus on at the moment, and the Arsenal supporters may be dreading Sunday’s short trip to Tottenham more than they have any other North London derby in recent times.

Mikel Arteta has seen his role come under steadily increasing pressure as a result - for the first time in the near-year since he took over - and defeat against a Spurs side this weekend would do nothing to help that.

All is certainly not lost, though, with Arsenal still only five points off the top four despite their poor start to the campaign, while away from home only Liverpool and Manchester City have beaten them in nine games across all competitions this season.
