Chelsea vs Manchester City

Chelsea have had the rub of the green against Manchester City in recent times having beaten them in each of their last three meetings, all under Thomas Tuchel, including the finals of the Champions League last term. Since then, the Blues have been on an upward trajectory, winning the UEFA Super Cup and now joint-topping the Premier League table, after an unbeaten start to the season.

Chelsea eased past London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in the Premier League last week before beating Aston Villa on penalties in the Carabao Cup earlier in the week. And, Tuchel & co. will be aiming to extend their streak and strengthen their grip at the top of the standings.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have had a topsy-turvy start to the new season, having lost the FA Community Shield while also dropping five points in five games in the Premier League, most recently playing out a goalless draw against Southampton. However, Pep Guardiola’s men bounced back in indomitable fashion in midweek, thrashing Wycombe Wanderers 6-1 in the Carabao Cup contest in midweek.

Currently fifth in the league table, three points off of Chelsea, a win could allow the Premier League champions move to the top, provided results elsewhere go their away.

Manchester City Team News

Pep Guardiola refused to state which players will be absent from Manchester City’s squad on Saturday against Chelsea, as he gave a rather cryptic injury update on Friday afternoon during a pre-match press conference.

The Manchester City boss explained*, “We still have a few [injuries]. Some came back a little bit [in] training, tomorrow we’ll decide if they’re ready to play or not. Not all of them [are in contention], some came back, and we will see how they react to training and tomorrow we will see.”*

Thomas Tuchel is also expected to be without a few important players for Saturday’s clash with Manchester City.

The German manager has confirmed during his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon that midfield duo Mason Mountand Christian Pulisic are both ruled out of this weekend’s game through injury.

However, Chelsea will have first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy back available, after the keeper missed his side’s dominant victory over Tottenham away from home last weekend.

Manchester United vs Aston Villa

For Manchester United, the early stages of the season have been a case of Premier League or bust. The Red Devils have been nigh on untarnished in the top-flight so far, winning four of their first five games. However, they have lost each of their two fixtures in other competitions so far, with BSC Young Boys beating them last week in the Champions League while West Ham booted them out of the Carabao Cup.

Aston Villa, like Manchester United, have not had the best of weeks, having been ousted of the EFL Cup themselves, losing out to Chelsea on penalties. In the Premier League, though, the Villans have blown hot and cold, winning two and losing as many games so far, although their most recent result was a 3-0 win over Everton last weekend.

The corresponding fixture last season saw Manchester United eke out a narrow 2-1 win over Aston Villa, with Bruno Fernandes scoring the match-winning penalty.
