Premier League action resumes this weekend, with Gameweek 6 of the 2021/22 season kicking off on Saturday with two lunch-time fixtures scheduled. One of these two games will be played at Old Trafford, where Manchester United will play hosts to Aston Villa.
The other game is the highlight of the weekend as champions of England will lock horns with the champions of Europe this weekend. Manchester City travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in what will be a rematch of the last season’s UEFA Champions League final.
Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool will all be in action in what promises to be an exciting weekend of premier league football!
Current Premier League Standings
In this thread, we shall be covering all Matchweek 6 fixtures of this Premier League Weekend
Chelsea vs Manchester City
Chelsea have had the rub of the green against Manchester City in recent times having beaten them in each of their last three meetings, all under Thomas Tuchel, including the finals of the Champions League last term. Since then, the Blues have been on an upward trajectory, winning the UEFA Super Cup and now joint-topping the Premier League table, after an unbeaten start to the season.
Chelsea eased past London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in the Premier League last week before beating Aston Villa on penalties in the Carabao Cup earlier in the week. And, Tuchel & co. will be aiming to extend their streak and strengthen their grip at the top of the standings.
Manchester City, meanwhile, have had a topsy-turvy start to the new season, having lost the FA Community Shield while also dropping five points in five games in the Premier League, most recently playing out a goalless draw against Southampton. However, Pep Guardiola’s men bounced back in indomitable fashion in midweek, thrashing Wycombe Wanderers 6-1 in the Carabao Cup contest in midweek.
Currently fifth in the league table, three points off of Chelsea, a win could allow the Premier League champions move to the top, provided results elsewhere go their away.
Manchester City Team News
Pep Guardiola refused to state which players will be absent from Manchester City’s squad on Saturday against Chelsea, as he gave a rather cryptic injury update on Friday afternoon during a pre-match press conference.
The Manchester City boss explained*, “We still have a few [injuries]. Some came back a little bit [in] training, tomorrow we’ll decide if they’re ready to play or not. Not all of them [are in contention], some came back, and we will see how they react to training and tomorrow we will see.”*

Thomas Tuchel is also expected to be without a few important players for Saturday’s clash with Manchester City.
The German manager has confirmed during his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon that midfield duo Mason Mountand Christian Pulisic are both ruled out of this weekend’s game through injury.
However, Chelsea will have first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy back available, after the keeper missed his side’s dominant victory over Tottenham away from home last weekend.
Chelsea have won their last three meetings with Man City in all competitions, in the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League. They last had a longer winning run against the Citizens between December 2005 and March 2009 (8 games).
Manchester City have won three of their last six Premier League away games against Chelsea (L3), more than they had in their previous 23 visits to Stamford Bridge in the top flight (W2 D8 L13). The Citizens are looking to win back-to-back away top-flight games vs Chelsea for the first time since January 1955.
None of the last 12 Premier League meetings between Chelsea and Manchester City have been drawn, with Chelsea winning five to City’s seven.
Chelsea and Manchester City have the joint-best defensive records in the Premier League this season, with just one goal conceded each (also level with Liverpool). Meanwhile, the Blues have an xG against figure of 5.5, conceding over four goals fewer than would be expected based on the quality of chances faced - the best such difference in the division this term.
Chelsea have kept 15 clean sheets in 24 Premier League games under Thomas Tuchel, more than any other side since the German took charge.
Manchester United vs Aston Villa
For Manchester United, the early stages of the season have been a case of Premier League or bust. The Red Devils have been nigh on untarnished in the top-flight so far, winning four of their first five games. However, they have lost each of their two fixtures in other competitions so far, with BSC Young Boys beating them last week in the Champions League while West Ham booted them out of the Carabao Cup.
Aston Villa, like Manchester United, have not had the best of weeks, having been ousted of the EFL Cup themselves, losing out to Chelsea on penalties. In the Premier League, though, the Villans have blown hot and cold, winning two and losing as many games so far, although their most recent result was a 3-0 win over Everton last weekend.
The corresponding fixture last season saw Manchester United eke out a narrow 2-1 win over Aston Villa, with Bruno Fernandes scoring the match-winning penalty.

Edinson Cavani remains highly doubtful to feature, while Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo are both definitely ruled out.
Matt Targett, Trezeguet, Morgan Sanson, John McGinn, Keinan Davis and Leon Bailey are all injury doubts, with the on-loan Axel Tuanzebe ineligible to face his parent club.
Manchester United have won 18 of their last 21 home league games against Aston Villa (D2 L1), failing to score on just one occasion in that run.
Aston Villa have picked up just one win in their last 45 Premier League games against Manchester United (D11 L33) and are winless in their last 17 against them since a 1-0 win at Old Trafford in December 2009.
In Premier League history, no side has won more games against an opponent than Manchester United’s 37 victories against Aston Villa.
Since a goalless draw with Manchester City last December, Manchester United have scored in each of their last 15 Premier League home games (44 goals in total). However, the Red Devils have also conceded in each of their last seven league games at Old Trafford, last having a longer top-flight home run without a clean sheet in February 1972 (8 games).
Manchester United are the highest scorers in the Premier League so far this season with 13 goals. With an expected goals total of eight, the Red Devils are also overperforming their xG more than any other side this season (5 goals more).
Aston Villa have lost both of their Premier League away games this season, conceding three goals in each defeat. Indeed, the Villans have lost five of their last eight away league games (W2 D1), more than they had in their previous 15 on the road (W7 D4 L4).
