🇮🇳 ISL 2020-21 Matchweek 18- Previews, Reviews, Match Results, Discussions- Mumbai City, Northeast United, ATK Mohun Bagan and More

@Shubhayan:
Just out of curiosity- Why would any team or ATKMB not use this often if it is supposedly difficult for Defense to handle this kind of attack?

Bengaluru FC Interim Head Coach Naushad Moosa After the Match

"We started well, We did well in the first 30 minutes. But that goal killed the motivation and we just lost focus.

"We might have to do that. Rahul also got injured today, his hamstring is gone. I need to get more youngsters in, that’s the option I have with even Cleiton Silva possibly not there the next game.

“As far as the coach is concerned, I have no idea about it. Let’s be more realistic, it is (not possible to qualify for playoffs). We have three games in hand and we keep fighting. It’s important to play our game.”

Here’s how the ISL table stacks up following tonight’s result.

The Mariners stand second with 33 points from 16 games while Bengaluru FC remains 6th with 19 points, 4 points adrift of the top-four chasing pack with one less game to play.

ATK Mohun Bagan are just a point behind Mumbai City FC, who are at the top of the table and the race to finish on top in the league stage is very much on. Mumbai City FC have already qualified for the playoffs and ATK Mohun Bagan have virtually done that as well.

@Jay
Nice question. For answering the question we need to look back at the earliest stage of football.

When the game of football started the squad use to have as many striker as possible. A side was use to contain 7 to 8 striker. Yes astonishing but right.

If you have got 7 to 8 striker in your side what are the problems?
no mid field. no defense.
Then the obvious question is If that was so impractical how come that sustained for so long. ?
Ans is simple as every team was following the same the pros and cons are equal for everyone. Resulting the competitive ness.
Two things are required for this kind of football.

  1. Individual brilliance.
  2. Ultra power / ultra skill.

But as the game evolve, the passing football came in timeline. Although there is controversy but it was widely accepted that this trend starts from holland. As you all might know tikitaka is also evolved from holland through crueff.

When this trend starts the need of mid field and defense generated. And eventually in modern football it is established that the other two sectors are more important that strike.

Why ATKMB gone for that old is gold strategy?

Manvir and Devid is real striker but they were positioned in withdrawal. Which is modern in nature. These two player helped mid a lot for the stability of the team.

Why to avoid this ?

If you are facing an opponent with some good striking force or creative mid field then this will create problem.
As the nature of the striker is to go forward that will create vacuum in midfield, which can be exploited.

But again for some opponent this can be super effective.

Makes sense! :raised_hands:

Thought so…So, I assume it will be a good strategy to adopt intermittently for bottom half teams on the points table. I can also see this as a good way to strengthen the GD which will benefit the team when the going gets tight at the top.

This is partly correct. This actually may happen that if you target one weak team and project your strike force you may get a great goal difference.

But I personally am not a fan of these. Reasons are very clear.

You are projecting 4 strikers in a particular starting 11:-

1.if one of them got injured you just can’t replace him you have to change the plan of action for that incident.

  1. Lack of mid field means lack of build up game. Attackers have to have set piece goal scoring ability for capitalizing those. ( In today’s game both the goals are from set pieces).

  2. Lack of mid means zero screening. That means your defense have to deal with direct counter attack.

  3. Do not dare to apply this plan with counter attacking team these could backfire like hell.

BFC, OFC to some extent CFC can be exploited by these kind of strategy. But if you try this with KBFC by looking at there table position you have to be disappointed. For JFC and NEUFC this kind of game is not applicable as well.

ATK Mohun Bagan defeated Bengaluru FC 2-0 in tonight’s encounter at the Fatorda. 37 minutes in, Roy Krishna earned a penalty and converted it with ease to add to his impressive tally of 11 goals in the season. Just 7 minutes later, new signing Marcelinho smashed home a stunning free-kick to double their lead before the end of the 1st half. As the Blues attempted a comeback in the 2nd period, Antonio Lopez Habas’ side stood firm. ATK Mohun Bagan now sit just 1 point behind the table-toppers Mumbai City FC.

Great insights shared! :+1: :+1:

Right…that’s why I said intermittently…a call to be made after a few games into the season having got to map the strengths and weaknesses of the teams, their relative position on the points table and keeping that surprise element in strategy.
Disclaimer: I am no expert on football but I tend to lean towards the psychological, strategical and analytical perspectives of the game…from a couch fan who seems to know it all.

Preview: Chennaiyin FC vs Jamshedpur FC

Chennaiyin FC and Jamshedpur FC lock horns in a battle of survival in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Wednesday at the Goa Medical College Ground in Bambolim. Both teams desperately need the three points to stay alive in the competition.

Chennaiyin FC find themselves in 8th position in the ISL standings and will have to win all of their remaining fixtures to stand a chance of qualifying for the top-four.

Csaba Laszlo’s side have shown promise and capability to win midfield battles and create scoring chances. However, due to a lack of quality strikers upfront, the Marina Machans have the worst conversion rate in the league.

Chennaiyin FC are on a five-match winless run and come into this game on the back of a drab goalless draw with regional neighbors Bengaluru FC. They will miss the services of left-back Jerry Lalrinzuala, who will serve a suspension.

Jamshedpur FC have performed on similar lines to their opponents Chennaiyin FC. They are placed 7th in the league standings and are just one point ahead of the Marina Machans.

Owen Coyle’s side have been inconsistent throughout the season despite showing glimpses of cohesion, quality and depth in the squad. They ended their five-match unbeaten run by getting past Odisha FC with a slender 1-0 win which provided signs of recovery in form for the team.

However, the Men in Steel succumbed to a 2-1 loss to SC East Bengal which further dampened their chances of making it to the top-four in the current season. The tie will be the second homecoming fixture of sorts for head coach Owen Coyle and striker Nerijus Valskis as they are set to face their former ISL side on Wednesday.

Chennaiyin manager ahead of the game

“We are the team who creates the most number of chances but also have missed the most. So, we have to be more clinical. I have respect for all opponents generally but as always we have to try to score goals and go for victory,” said Laszlo ahead of the game.

It’s going to be a tough match against Chennaiyin because we both know that whoever wins, it takes you to two points off the semis [in Chennaiyin’s case three points], obviously with the other teams having a game in hand. But that’s what you got to do. Keep trying to apply that pressure. So, we’ll be doing everything we can to win the game. We have to try to get points to reduce the deficit. Obviously, the teams who are already there will have the advantage. So, it’s for them to give it away and for us to win games and earn that spot if it becomes available," Coyle said ahead of the game.

Chennaiyin FC 0-0 Jamshedpur FC : Half Time

It is goalless after the first 45 minutes at the GMC Stadium in Bambolim. Chennaiyin FC had plenty of chances with Rehenesh denying Chhangte early on. Rahim Ali was also at the end of a couple of great chances but the elusive goal eludes them still. Jamshedpur FC did not get any shot on target but their defensive shape remained decent for most part of the game so far.
