Luxembourg vs Portugal

Luxembourg-vs-Portugal-Prediction-by-LeagueLane-World-Cup-Qualifiers

The final set of fixtures of the ongoing international break will be played out this week and Portugal will be in action at Stade Josy Barthel where they face off against Luxembourg in a Group A clash in the FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifiers on Tuesday.

Luxembourg began their international break with a friendly against the upcoming World Cup hosts Qatar last week and lost 1-0. However, they followed that up with a 1-0 upset win over the Republic of Ireland in their first World Cup qualifying game this past weekend and are currently third in the table, just a point off of leaders Serbia.

Portugal, meanwhile, were made to work hard by Azerbaijan as they eked out a narrow win but were held to a 2-2 draw by Serbia, although they were hard done by a mistake by the referee which ended up costing them the game. The Seleccao are second in Group A, level on points with Serbia, and will be hoping to return to winning ways on Tuesday.

The last time these two sides faced each other in November 2019, Portugal beat Luxembourg 2-0 with goals coming from Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Luxembourg

Head coach Luc Holtz called up 24 players for the fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Portugal.

No injuries or suspensions were recorded in the game against the Boys in Green.

Portugal

Portugal have played two games in four days and rotation might factor into Fernando Santos’ plans to avoid any injuries or fatigue.

Diogo Jota could retain his spot in the starting lineup following his heroics on Saturday. Joao Felix could be handed his first start of the qualifiers, while Nuno Mendes could make his second start for his country.

Cristiano Ronaldo might be handed a rest, having started both games this week.

Cristiano Ronaldo

the Juventus superstar was on target when these two teams met last time.

And even though he hasn’t looked at his best in the last two games, Ronaldo has the ability to strike back hard especially when the chips are down. Expect Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer to make a telling impact against Luxembourg this Tuesday.

Belgium vs Belarus

Belgium-vs-Belarus-Prediction-by-LeagueLane-World-Cup-Qualifiers
Today, the Red Devils prepare for their final game in this year’s first international break as they play hosts to Belarus in the Dan Dreef Stadion in Leuven. It could be a vital game for the hosts, knowing a victory could potentially put them back on top, especially with Czech Republic facing a tricky contest against Wales on the same day.

Belarus, though, are hoping to emerge as the surprise package in this group, having registered a 4-2 victory over Estonia in the first game. It has left them in third place currently, although that could change real soon as Mikhail Markel’s men take on one of the best national teams in the world.

It is also an away game for the eastern European nation, and despite the lack of audience, they should be well aware of Belgium’s dominance in the home turf – making them the obvious underdogs in this affair.

Thomas Vermaelen was forced to return to his club Vissel Kobe following last week’s win over Wales due to Japanese quarantine measures, while Yannick Carrasco will link up with the team again after not travelling to Prague.

With no injuries or suspensions to contend with, the guests are likely to stick with the side that ran out impressive winners over Estonia.

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku is undoubtedly the most important player for Belgium at the moment, having starred in the first two matches in the European qualifiers so far. His robust presence in the final third has made it difficult for defenders to keep him quiet so far, which was evident in the recent draw with Czech Republic

A riot of goals! Mongolia is ranked #190 while Japan is ranked #27 in the most recent FIFA ranking. This match wasn’t a battle of equals so to me it makes such high goal scoring less appreciative.

I feel bad for Mongolia…no team should ever face such a humiliating defeat!
