Could Manchester United get relegated this season? 😬

Could Manchester United Really Get Relegated?

Manchester United finds itself in a precarious position, sitting just 12 points above the relegation zone. While relegation still seems unlikely, their inconsistent form and struggles this season raise an interesting debate—could it actually happen?

With tough fixtures ahead and other teams fighting for survival, a dramatic collapse isn’t entirely out of the question. But is it realistic, or just an overreaction?

Ruben Amorim, the club’s manager, has acknowledged the possibility of relegation due to recent poor performances, including a string of losses. He emphasized that the team needs to focus on survival and improve their results.

I highly doubt Manchester United will get relegated, even if they’re struggling in 15th place right now. They have too much individual quality, and while their form is poor, there are at least three or four worse teams in the league.

That said, if their performances don’t improve, they could get dragged into a serious relegation battle. The squad looks disjointed, injuries are piling up, and there’s no clear playing style under Ruben Amorim. If things continue like this, a bottom-half finish isn’t impossible.

Still, with players like Bruno Fernandes, Gernacho, and Højlund, they should have enough to turn it around. But in football, nothing is guaranteed—just ask Chelsea in 2015/16!

No, they are not that bad. They are likely to finish the season in between 11-15.

According to data from Opta, the probability of Manchester United finishing in the bottom three is minimal. The supercomputer simulations indicate:

  • Relegation Probability: Just 0.15% chance of being relegated, meaning they would be relegated only 15 times out of 10,000 simulations.
  • Projected Points: If they continue their current form, they are expected to finish the season with around 50 points, which is typically safe from relegation.

Manchester United’s current season statistics are concerning and comparable to some of their worst seasons in the Premier League era. Here’s a comparison:

Points

  • Current Season (2024/25): If they maintain an average of 1.16 points per game, they will end with about 44 points, which would be their lowest ever in the Premier League.
  • Worst Previous Season: Their worst points total was 58 in the 2021/22 season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick, and Ralf Rangnick.

Goals Scored

  • Current Season (2024/25): They are on track to score around 43 goals based on an average of 1.12 goals per game, which would be a new low for them.
  • Previous Worst: Their lowest goal tally was 49 goals in the 2015/16 season under Louis van Gaal.

Goals Conceded

  • Current Season (2024/25): Projected to concede about 53 goals this season.
  • Previous Worst: They conceded a record-high of 58 goals last season (2023/24) under Erik ten Hag.

Wins and Losses

  • Current Season (2024/25): Need nine wins from their final thirteen games to avoid setting a new low for fewest wins; they have already lost twelve games so far this season.
  • Previous Worst: Fewest wins were sixteen in the 2021/22 season; most losses were fourteen last year (2023/24).

Overall, Manchester United is experiencing one of their most challenging seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. The team’s performance under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim has been disappointing compared to previous years.

However, it’s highly improbable that they will drop to the Championship this season. Their current form needs improvement, but they are not considered serious candidates for relegation at this point.
