There’s some controversy around the Man City goal against Real Madrid last night, with eagle-eyed fans spotting an issue in the build-up to De Bruyne’s vicious strike.
Champions League broadcaster beIN Sports used technology to definitively determine that the ball went out of play in the lead-up to the goal. Many believe that should have led to the goal being disallowed.
According to 3D triangulation technology used by beIN Sports, the ball went out of play in the build-up. The technology is similar to goal-line technology and the technology Video Assistant Referees (VARs) use to determine offside situations.
So technically the referee crew on the field made a mistake, and should have stopped play for a Real Madrid throw-in.
The play was not reviewable by VAR, according to CBS Sports rules official Christina Unkel, who appeared on the U.S. broadcaster’s postgame show.
Since the incident did not occur in the immediate attacking buildup to the goal — possession briefly changed hands back to Real Madrid before Man City ultimately regained control — it cannot be reviewed by the VAR.
André Onana is the first Inter goalkeeper to keep 7 clean sheets in a single Champions League campaign.
The Cameroonian shot stopper has been almost unstoppable in the net this term, and as the stats to back it up…
Not only has he kept more clean sheets than any other keeper in the #UCL this term, he has also made the most saves, with 43 in total – 5 more than second-placed Thibaut Courtois.
Oldest players to score a Champions League goal this season:
◎ Luka Modrić (37 years and 54 days old vs. Celtic)
◉ Edin Dźeko (37 years and 54 days old vs. Milan)
The finest #UCL wines.
Dźeko’s achievement is even more impressive however, when you realise only Ryan Giggs has scored in a UCL semi-final at an older age (37 years 148 days old) – making them the only 37 year-olds to ever score in this stage of the competition.
