Inter Milan vs Liverpool

image

Liverpool cruised through the opening phase of the continental competition, winning each of their six games in a difficult Group B that had Atletico Madrid, FC Porto and AC Milan. The Reds were made to work hard in a couple of matches, but showed great grit and determination to power through to the knockouts. Jurgen Klopp’s men go into the game on a six-game winning streak, most recently beating Burnley 1-0 in the Premier League.

Inter Milan finished second in Group D behind Spanish giants Real Madrid. The Nerazzurri had a few nervy moments along the way, with minnows Sheriff Tiraspol threatening to upset the apple cart, but ultimately managed to sail through with three wins and a draw. Simone Inzaghi’s side have failed to win three of their last six games in all competitions (D2 L1) and were held to a 1-1 draw by Napoli in their latest game.

This will be the first time that Liverpool and Inter Milan face each other since 2008, when the Reds triumphed over the Italians in the knockout stages.

Inter Milan vs Liverpool team news

Klopp has a wealth of attacking options to choose from. Mo Salah and Sadio Mane are both back from the Africa Cup of Nations and started against Burnley at the weekend, while Diogo Jota was only a substitute for that game and could return to the starting XI.

January signing Luis Diaz is available despite playing for Porto in the group stage, with Uefa’s cup-tied rules having changed in 2018 to allow clubs to register three new players in their squads following the January window, regardless of their earlier appearances.

This will be the fifth meeting between Inter Milan and Liverpool in European competitions. Each of the previous four clashes have been in the knockout stages of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, with Inter Milan prevailing in the semi-finals in 1964/65 while Liverpool eliminated them at the Round of 16 stage in 2007/08.
