Chelsea vs Real Madrid

Chelsea, who won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel last season, sailed through the group stage without any hiccups. However, they did lose a game on their way to finishing second in Group H behind Juventus. The Blues eased past LOSC Lille in the Round of 16, beating them 4-1 on aggregate. However, Chelsea go into arguably the biggest game of their season so far on the back of a shock 4-1 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League.

Real Madrid finished at the top of Group D, cruising through with comfort barring the shock loss to Sheriff Tiraspol. Drawn against PSG in the Round of 16, Los Blancos lost the first leg, only to produce a stirring comeback in the second leg, led by Karim Benzema, to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory. Having suffered a heavy defeat to Barcelona in La Liga before the international break, Carlo Ancelotti’s side bounced back to beat Celta Vigo 2-1 in their latest game.

This tie is a replay of the semi-final of the last season when Chelsea ousted Real Madrid 3-1 on aggregate on their way to lifting the trophy.

Chelsea vs Real Madrid team news

Chelsea are likely to have a nearly fully-fit squad to choose from tonight, with only long-term absentee Ben Chilwell (knee) definitely still sidelined.

Reece James returned from his latest setback off the bench against Brentford, while Christian Pulisic should be in contention after missing out at the weekend following jet lag on his return from USA duty.

Callum Hudson-Odoi could remain out with Achilles and back issues, however.

Madrid will be boosted by the return of Ancelotti senior to the dugout tonight, with assistant and son Davide having taken charge at Celta Vigo.

Luka Jovic (ankle) and Isco (back) are out, while Eden Hazard is denied a reunion with his old club after undergoing more ankle surgery.

This is the second consecutive season in which Chelsea and Real Madrid have met in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages. The Blues could become the first English team to eliminate Los Blancos from the knockout stages of the competition more than once.

Injured in the Champions League final. Injured at Euro 2020. Worried he wouldn’t be the same.

But don’t doubt Kevin De Bruyne.

He’s now been directly involved in 11 goals in his last 12 Champions League knockout matches, and he looks unstoppable again :raising_hands:
