VAR is now at a “crisis point”, according to pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
Liverpool had a Luis Diaz goal incorrectly ruled out for offside during Saturday’s Premier League defeat at Tottenham due to miscommunication between VAR Darren England and on-field referee Simon Hooper.
The match was goalless at the time of the incident, with the Reds – who were eventually reduced to nine men – going on to lose 2-1 to an own goal from Joel Matip deep into stoppage time.
Jamie Carragher says the officials responsible for incorrectly confirming the decision to disallow Luis Diaz’s goal at Tottenham “panicked” and “froze” once they realised their error.
It appears that the VAR officials made a significant human error when they failed to overturn Luis Diaz’s wrongly disallowed goal in the match between Tottenham and Liverpool.
The PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) admitted that a clear and obvious factual error occurred during the match, and the goal should have been awarded through VAR intervention.
The VAR error has caused frustration and disappointment for Liverpool players and fans, with some losing faith in the VAR system.

We need to see and hear what VAR officials are saying like in rugby and cricket. Why is it all secret in football? Very few issues in rugby and cricket as you can hear ‘live’ what the on field and off field officials are saying as they replay the ‘incident’.

The statement from Liverpool is commendable, and we all should stand for justice.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister could reportedly be facing a ban after he controversially posted on social media about Tottenham playing with 12 men in their game at the weekend.
This is a clear dig at the referee and accusations of bias are bound to be taken very seriously, so it remains to be seen if Mac Allister could now be set to miss a long run of games for the Reds.
The Argentina international played for Liverpool in their 2-1 defeat at Spurs, with Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal the biggest talking point.
However, Liverpool also had to play with nine men after red cards for both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Mac Allister’s frustration is understandable, but there’s also surely no way he’s going to get away with accusing referee Simon Hooper of acting against his club.
The audio of the VAR discussion which led to a Luis Díaz goal being incorrectly ruled out for offside is set to be released once PGMOL has completed its internal review and shared the findings with Liverpool.

“The only outcome should be a replay…probably won’t happen. The argument against that will be if we open that gate everyone will ask for it…But something like that as far as I can remember has never happened. That’s why it should be a replay."
