Trent Alexander-Arnold is not included in England’s matchday roster for tonight’s match against Germany.
The Liverpool defender was benched by Gareth Southgate for the loss to Italy last week, and he appears likely to start Kieran Trippier for the Nations League match at Wembley.
Prior to the game, Southgate called the competition for the right-back position “tough” and said his preference for fielding wing-backs was the driving force behind the change.
“We are fortunate to have players with a variety of player profiles in that position, so he does have a tremendous range of passing, of course.”
Trippier and Reece James are both excellent passers of the ball if we play with wing-backs, and we must constantly consider the whole picture and evaluate the players on all of their qualities.
"They have all been in Champions League finals, and some of them have advanced to the championship rounds of significant competitions with us. Trent has won the league, Trippier has won the Spanish league, and [Kyle] Walker has won the English league.
It’s incredibly hard to decide in this situation, but we have to follow our convictions because, as we all know, the decision’s consequence will eventually determine how I’m evaluated.
Alexander-Arnold is still in Southgate’s sights, and he said that Jurgen Klopp’s style of play has been key to bringing the best out of the 23-year-old - something he is yet to do.
Fikayo Tomori has made more successful tackles than any other English centre-back in Europe’s top five leagues since the start of last season.
Still not enough to get in the England squad
Only two sides have failed to score a non-penalty goal in this year’s Nations League:
England
San Marino
To advance to the Nations League Finals…
Hungary need a point
Italy need a win
Today should be a fun one
50 - Harry Kane tonight becomes just the fifth player to start 50 games as captain of the England men’s national side after Bobby Moore (90), Billy Wright (90), Bryan Robson (64) and David Beckham (59). Milestone.
62 - Heading into tonight’s game against Germany, England have failed to score with any of their last 62 non-penalty shots, a run of 7 hours and 30 minutes without a non-penalty goal. Concerning.
67’—England 0-2 Germany
72’—England 1-2 Germany
75’—England 2-2 Germany
England’s first two goals in 344 minutes come at the right time
