After 16 days of rollercoaster of heartwarming, heartbreaking and triumphant moments, the Tokyo Olympics are coming to a close this evening.
The theme of the ceremony is- “Worlds We Share” is meant to make athletes and viewers “think about what the future holds” and “expresses the idea that each of us inhabits their own world.”
A display of beautiful, luminous colours swirl together, representing the many flags of the world.
They form the Olympic Rings, a timeless symbol of unity.
The volunteers at Tokyo Olympics accept small tokens of gifts from the newly-elected IOC Athletes Commission members. Over 70,000 volunteers made the Games possible despite the major Covid-19 threat.
The medals for the marathon race were given out in the closing ceremony. It’s an ode to ancient Greek history that marathon is one of the last contests in Olympics.
In 490 BC, after a Persian army was defeated by Athenians on the plains of Marathon, the legend grew that a foot courier ran all the way to Athens to convey the great news of victory. And myth has it that he fell down dead after declaring , ‘Rejoice! We conquer!’. The legend of the runner who died to bring the good news took hold and out of that emerged the modern marathon.
For the first time in history, a men’s and women’s victory ceremony happens together at a Summer Olympic Games.
The medallists of the marathon are presented with their medals! Congratulations to all!
In honour of the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the Greek flag is raised above the Olympic Stadium.
After the traditional dance performances, Olympic anthem, the Mayor of Tokyo handed over the flag to IOC President Thomas Bach, who further handed it to the Mayor of Paris for the next Olympics.
The national flag is raised, an invitation to the world to attend the next Olympic Games, in just three years’ time!

United States of America made it to the top of the medals table on the Final day of the Olympics!
The US Team won total 113 medals - 39 41 and 33
China was displaced to 2nd position on the last day securing 88 medals.
Host nation Japan put up a spectacular performance with 27 14 and 17 - a total of 58 medals
Team India won 7 medals- India’s best ever Olympic performance! 1 2 and 4
India ranked 48 on the medals table. The win of 7 medals with one gold was a promising comeback to the Olympic stage since the golden era of it’s dominance in hockey. A gold in a mainstream mass-sport (javelin throw by Neeraj Chopra) marks the beginning of hope & hunger to leap ahead towards Paris 2024.
34 Medals were handed out on the last day of Olympics. A total of 1080 medals were awarded to 93 countries in 16 days. There were 205 countries participating in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Neeraj Chopra’s javelin gold made sure India left Tokyo with a record medal haul – the one gold, two silver and four bronze – overtaking the previous-best tally of six at the London Games.
