Chelsea vs Wolves: Match Preview and Team News

Chelsea start life without Frank Lampard in the dugout on Wednesday when they welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

A 2-1 defeat to the West Midlands outfit back in December was the start of a downward spiral for Lampard, who was relieved of his duties on Monday morning.

This is the first of two home games in five days that will help shape the next few months as Chelsea move into a new era under Thomas Tuchel. The highly regarded Bavarian coach, who took training at Cobham yesterday, will be in the dugout at Stamford Bridge tonight.

The Blues have failed to score in only one of our past 18 top-flight meetings with Wolves and won the same fixture last season 2-0 thanks to first-half stoppage time goals from Mason Mount and Olivier Giroud.

New Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will be in the Stamford Bridge dugout for Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Wolves.

The German head coach has replaced Frank Lampard at the Blues’ helm and got straight to work in west London on Tuesday night.

N’Golo Kante will be a doubt with hamstring trouble, but otherwise Chelsea should have a relatively clean bill of health beyond.

Wolves are awaiting a work permit before new signing Willian Jose can link up with the squad.

The Brazilian striker has joined on loan from Real Sociedad until the end of the season but also needs a negative coronavirus test before he can travel to England.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo remains without Marcal (groin), Jonny (knee), Morgan Gibbs-White (coronavirus) and Raul Jimenez (fractured skull), but hopes Jonny will be back in two weeks.

Opta Stats

Chelsea have won five of their six home Premier League matches against Wolves (D1), winning 2-0 at Stamford Bridge last season.

Wolves, who were 2-1 winners at Molineux earlier in the campaign, are looking for their first top-flight league double over Chelsea since the 1974/75 season under manager Bill McGarry.

Since their return to the Premier League in 2018, Wolves have earned 23 points from their 13 league games in London (W6 D5 L2) - only Liverpool (31) and Manchester City (28) have won more away points in the capital in this time.

Chelsea have lost seven home Premier League matches under Frank Lampard (P28 W15 D6 L7), as many as his predecessors Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri did in 57 games combined (W40 D10 L7), while only Glenn Hoddle (17) and Claudio Ranieri (11) have lost more Premier League games at Stamford Bridge as Blues boss.

Everton vs Leicester: Match Preview, Team News & Stats

This campaign is shaping up to be one to remember for Everton and Leicester, who are not only flying high in the Premier League but are also through to round five of the FA Cup.

Everton saw off Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 on Sunday and Leicester were 3-1 winners against another Championship side in Brentford.

Carlo Ancelotti and Brendan Rodgers will welcome a run deep into the world’s most famous domestic cup competition, but for now focus is back on the Premier League.

The Toffees may trail their opponents by six points, but they have two games in hand. Win those and it will be the title Ancelotti is targeting, rather than just the top four.

A 1-0 home loss to West Ham United aside, Everton have been in superb form over the past six weeks, collecting 15 points from the past 18 on offer.

One concern for Ancelotti, though, will be his side’s form at Goodison Park, where they have lost three of their last five in the Premier League.

Only Manchester United have collected more points on their travels in the English top flight this term than Leicester, meanwhile, the Foxes having won seven out of nine.

Vardy’s hip surgery is unlikely to rule the striker out for too long, but he will sit out this trip to Goodison Park and possibly the visit of Leeds United next week.

Kelechi Iheanacho is the obvious choice to fill in for Vardy, but Ayoze Perez was selected against Brentford and may retain his place here.

Rodgers’s injury list is otherwise clearing up, with Ricardo Pereira and Caglar Soyuncu among those now back in contention.

As for the home side, Lucas Digne and Alex Iwobi are in line to make their returns from injury in a major boost for Ancelotti.

Another major plus for the Italian coach is that Dominic Calvert-Lewin ended a six-game goal drought at the weekend and will be raring to go here.

Allan and Fabian Delph remain sidelined, while Jean-Philippe Gbamin is a long-term absentee for the Toffees.

Everton have won their last two Premier League games against Leicester, with the Toffees looking to win three league games in a row against the Foxes for the first time since a run of four between 1977 and 1980.

Leicester City have won only two of their 14 away Premier League games against Everton (D7 L5), losing 2-1 last season.

Everton are looking to complete a league double over Leicester for only the second time in the last 15 seasons the sides have met, achieving it in 2016/17 when the Foxes were the reigning champions.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has won 52.2% of his Premier League matches as Foxes boss (P67 W35 D12 L20), the best ratio of any permanent Foxes manager in their top-flight history.

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti has lost three home league games this season - the Italian has only four at home in a season twice previously as a manager, doing so in both in 2006/07 and 2007/08 as AC Milan boss.

Manchester United vs Sheffield United: Match Preview, Team News and Stats.

Man United maintained their good form with a 3-2 win over rivals Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, with Bruno Fernandes yet again stepping up with the winner.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have now lost just one of their last 13 matches in all competitions, winning nine of those.

In the league, meanwhile, it is 13 games without defeat for United, most recently seeing off Fulham 2-1 last week through goals from Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba.

The Blades may have won three of their last four, but two of those victories have come against lower-league opponents in the FA Cup.

Chris Wilder’s men have collected just five points from a possible 57 in the league and remain on course to go down with the lowest points tally in Premier League history.

They lost 3-1 to Tottenham Hotspur in their most recent top-flight outing, while away from home they have avoided defeat just three times in their last 15 matches.

If that was not bad enough for the Yorkshire side, they have lost their last seven away league encounters with Man United in a run stretching back to August 1975.

Everything points towards what should be a routine victory for the Red Devils, then, as they look to make it five home league wins in their last six games.

Marcus Rashford is available for Manchester United’s return to Premier League action against Sheffield United.

The forward tweaked his knee towards the end of Sunday’s FA Cup fourth-round win against Liverpool but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed his availability after training fully on Tuesday morning.

Phil Jones and Brandon Williams have been absent recently, while Amad Diallo is closing in on his first matchday squad involvement and fellow teenager Facundo Pellistri has recovered from coronavirus.

Sheffield United are hoping forward Lys Mousset can overcome a knock to feature.

The Frenchman, who has missed the Blades’ last three matches, is the only player on the club’s injury list that could return.

The game comes too soon for Ben Osborn and Oli McBurnie while Sander Berge, Jack Robinson and Jack O’Connell face longer absences. John Egan is also out through suspension.

Opta Stats

Manchester United have won their last seven home top-flight encounters with Sheffield United, a run that stretches back to August 1975.

Since a 2-1 win over Man Utd in August 1992 on the first ever day of the Premier League, Sheffield United have picked up just one point in eight top-flight meetings with the Red Devils (D1 L7).

Sheffield United have kept one clean sheet in their last 34 top-flight matches against Manchester United, a 1-0 home win in September 1972; their last away league clean sheet against the Red Devils was in a 1-0 win in April 1962, with Alan Hodgkinson in goal for the Blades.

Manchester United go into this match 35 points ahead of Sheffield United; they have won just one of their last six Premier League matches against teams they have had a 35+ point advantage in the table (D2 L3), losing two of their last three at home - 0-1 vs West Brom in April 2018 (50 pts ahead) and 0-2 vs Cardiff in May 2019 (35 pts ahead).

Chelsea XI vs Wolves: Tuchel’s starting lineup - Mount out; Havertz in; Werner on bench

A new era begins at Chelsea tonight as Thomas Tuchel takes charge of his first match, with Wolves visiting Stamford Bridge.

All eyes are on the first team he picks - and intriguingly, Kai Havertz starts but Timo Werner is on the bench.

Havertz starts along with compatriot Antonio Rudiger, while Mason Mount appears to be the first casualty of the Tuchel era with Lampard’s key midfielder relegated to the bench.

Christian Pulisic also loses his starting spot, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Olivier Giroud playing in attack.

N’Golo Kante is close to recovery from a hamstring injury, but will have to wait until Burnley on Sunday to make his comeback.

It will be fascinating to see how Tuchel handles Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was going to be allowed to leave this month after being displaced by Edouard Mendy as No1.

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Thiago Silva, Chilwell, Jorginho, Kovacic, Ziyech, Havertz, Hudson-Odoi, Giroud

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Alonso, Abraham, Pulisic, Werner, Zouma, Mount, James, Emerson Palmieri
