Preview: Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur

Christmas will come early for Premier League fans when the champions host the leaders in a mouth-watering midweek showdown as Liverpool welcomes current League leaders Tottenham to Anfield in a mouthwatering midweek fixture.

The two sides are separated by only goal difference heading into the contest, but both will be looking to bounce back from underwhelming 1-1 draws at the weekend.

There are plenty of perfectly-poised elements to this game, then, but despite being so well matched in so many areas, it is Liverpool who will go into it as favourites due largely to their home form.

Comfortable victories over Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers in their last two league games at Anfield mean that they have now won 31 of their last 32 such outings, taking a staggering 94 points from the 96 on offer in that time, and scoring 93 goals too.

Spurs are now unbeaten in their last nine away league games - their longest such run since April 2018 - and, while four of those have been draws, they would probably regard another stalemate as a good result on Wednesday night.

Tottenham have also won three of their last seven away league games against the reigning top-flight champions, which is as many as they had managed in their previous 40 such matches.

Add to that the Mourinho factor and his ability to grind out results when visiting fellow ‘big six’ opposition and Spurs have every reason to believe that they can achieve the rare feat of coming away from Anfield with something as a visiting team.

Mourinho has never won in five previous away meetings with Klopp, which is his worst such record against any manager in his career.

Whether he can end that hoodoo - and Tottenham can end their poor recent record against Liverpool - remains to be seen, but it is a very finely poised encounter which could prove to be pivotal at the end of the season.

Preview: Arsenal vs Southampton

Out-of-form Arsenal will be looking to ease the pressure on under-fire manager, Mikel Arteta when they welcome high flying Southampton to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 25 home league games against Wednesday’s opponents, including all 21 such Premier League meetings - the longest home run without ever losing against another team any club has enjoyed in Premier League history.

Indeed, that streak stretches all the way back to 1987, although the significance of that is dulled somewhat by the fact that Arsenal fell to their first top-flight loss at the hands of Burnley since September 1974 last time out.

It would have also been very rare in that 33-year Southampton drought for the Saints to go into this fixture as favourites, but that is a status which their league position and form demands they take on for this game.

Only in 2014-15 have Southampton ever had more points than their current tally of 23 after 12 games of a top-flight season, and victory at the Emirates could even take them temporarily top of the table for a few hours at least, depending on results elsewhere.

Sunday’s 3-0 win over Sheffield United means that Southampton have now won seven and lost just one of their last 10 Premier League games - almost the polar opposite of Arsenal’s form heading into this match.

Preview: Leicester City vs Everton

Leicester City welcome Everton to the King Power Stadium on Wednesday evening sitting just one point adrift of Premier League leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the Toffees remain just four points adrift of their hosts after recording an impressive 1-0 victory over Chelsea at the weekend.

When his side suffered a home defeat to Fulham at the end of November, Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers would have naturally had concerns over whether his squad were beginning to falter after a hectic schedule.

Three wins in eight days have been enough to end such worries for the Foxes boss, who witnessed Leicester blow away Brighton & Hove Albion with a ruthless first-half showing at the weekend.

However, the Toffees are now back on track, their 1-0 triumph at home to Chelsea on Saturday evening improving their recent return to seven points from four matches.

Despite victory coming courtesy of a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty, keeping out an in-form Blues outfit will only have encouraged Ancelotti ahead of another tough test.

While Everton now sit just three points off the Champions League positions, the same margin separates the Merseyside team and 13th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.
