Kieran Trippier suspended for 10 weeks after breaking FA betting rules

Kieran Trippier has been banned for 10 weeks and fined £70,000 by the FA following misconduct in relation to breaches of betting regulations.

The Atletico Madrid right back was charged by the FA in May and had to withdraw from the England squad in October for the Nations League fixture against Denmark to attend a personal hearing over the allegations.

These relate to bets placed around the time of his move to Spain from Tottenham in July 2019 - an independent commission was appointed to hear the case, with four of the alleged breaches found proven and three dismissed.

Trippier’s worldwide suspension means he is banned from all football-related activity up to and including Sunday 28 February 2021, meaning he will miss the first-leg of Atletico Madrid’s last-16 Champions League tie against Chelsea.

Real Madrid keep slipping up against the smaller sides

By dropping two points at Elche on Wednesday night, Real Madrid once again showed their weakness at seeing off the smaller teams this season.
The 1-1 draw with Los Franjiverdes at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero saw Los Merengues’ six-game winning run come to an end, and it was all the more disappointing given the strong opposition they have beaten in recent weeks, such as Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.

New year, new hope: Football offers a sunnier 2021, lit up by England’s charge into summer’s Euros

1609462979763
It is hard to conceptualise it as we enter 2021 in the grip of the Covid variant, but what lies ahead this year just might be football’s golden summer.

The European Championship, concluding in London on July 11, will throw open these islands’ doors for a carnival of rediscovered freedoms and companionship, built around sport’s most beautiful game.

And, what’s more, the notion of England winning the thing, just months after the nation staggers from the depths of a deeply difficult winter, is not so fanciful.

Real Madrid top LaLiga points ranking in 2020

Zidane’s team registered more points than anyone else during the calendar year (83), followed by Atlético (73) and Barça (68). Messi, the top scorer on 19 goals.

Real Madrid top LaLiga points table for 2020. Zidane’s team end the calendar year in pole position with 83 points, ahead of Atlético on 73 (having played two games less) and Barcelona, third on 68 points (with one game less). One of the keys to Madrid’s tally was the excellent final sprit to the title when play resumed after the Covid-19 lockdown, when Los Blancos recorded nine wins and one draw in 10 games, to clinch the league. Madrid only dropped points when they had already had been crowned champions.
