LIONEL MESSI PASSES DIEGO MARADONA FOR MOST WORLD CUP GOALS BY AN ARGENTINE! :argentina:

Match Highlights: :netherlands: Netherlands 3-1 :us: USA

Denzel Dumfries starred as the Netherlands saw off a spirited second half from USA to win their last-16 tie 3-1 and book their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

First-half goals from Memphis Depay (10) and Daley Blind (45+1), swept home in similar fashion from Dumfries crosses, put the Dutch in control but USA forced both the Inter Milan defender and Cody Gakpo to clear off the line before Haji Wright produced an “impossible” 76th-minute finish to set up a big finale.

Standout performer Dumfries ended their hopes of a dramatic turnaround, though, volleying in Blind’s cross in the 83rd minute to secure the victory.

Match Highlights: :argentina: Argentina 2-1 :australia: Australia

Lionel Messi inspired Argentina into the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup after another superb display in his 1,000th game that saw a valiant Australia side go out despite a late rally.

Messi opened the scoring in the first half after Argentina had struggled to break down the resilient Socceroos, curling a left-footed shot into the bottom corner after starting the move with a sprint into the area.

An error by Australia keeper Mat Ryan presented Julian Alvarez with a simple chance to make it 2-0 after 57 minutes, seemingly to put Argentina out of reach.

But a freakishly deflected goal gave the Australians hope late on, Craig Goodwin’s shot bouncing in off Enzo Fernandez. Aziz Behich’s weaving run into the box was ended by a great tackle by Lisandro Martinez, and in the 97th minute, Garang Kuol’s shot was saved at close range by Emi Martinez.

France vs Poland Key Stats

  • Sunday’s clash will be the second meeting between France and Poland at the World Cup, with their previous one coming in the third-place play-off match in the 1982 tournament – a 3-2 win for Poland. France are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with Poland across all competitions (W3 D4), with their last defeat against them being in a friendly in August 1982 (0-4). Les Bleus have kept a clean sheet in each of the last three in this run, all of which have been since the turn of the millennium

  • Since the Round of 16 was introduced in the 1986 World Cup, France have appeared at this stage on five occasions and progressed from all five ties (1986, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018). The only other nations to appear at this stage more than once and progress each time are Germany (8/8) and Croatia (2/2).

  • Sunday’s game will be the third time that Poland will face the reigning champions in a World Cup. They have avoided defeat in each of the previous two – 1-0 vs Brazil in 1974 and 0-0 vs Germany in 1978. For France, meanwhile, this will be their first knockout stage game at the World Cup as reigning champions.

  • Antoine Griezmann has created more chances than any other France player at the 2022 World Cup (11). The only player to create 10+ in either of the last two World Cups for France has been Griezmann, while he has already surpassed his total from 2018 when they lifted the trophy (10).

  • Wojciech Szczesny has a 90% save percentage at the 2022 World Cup. He had saved each of his first 16 shots on target faced in the tournament prior to Alexis Mac Allister’s goal for Argentina. Szczesny has saved a penalty in each of his last two games at the World Cup, with no goalkeeper on record ever stopping three penalties in a single edition of the tournament (since 1966, excluding shootouts).

England vs Senegal Key Stats

  • Sunday’s clash will be England and Senegal’s first-ever senior international meeting. It will be the 13th time that England’s first-ever match against a nation has come in the World Cup. And the Three Lions have lost just one of the previous 12 such games (W7 D4), a 0-1 defeat to the USA in 1950.

  • Senegal have alternated between winning (3) and not winning (D1 L2) in their six World Cup meetings with European opponents. They lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in their most recent such game.

  • England have never lost in seven previous World Cup matches against African opposition (W4 D3). Their only such outing in the knockout stages came against Cameroon in the 1990 quarter-final, winning 3-2 after extra time, with their goals coming from David Platt and two Gary Lineker penalties.

  • African nations have lost eight of their nine World Cup knockout round games against European sides, except Senegal’s 2-1 win over Sweden in the Round of 16 in 2002. However, in all competitions, England have never lost against an African side (W14 D6).

  • Since beating France 1-0 in their first-ever World Cup match in 2002, Senegal have conceded at least once in their last ten games in the competition.
