Morocco dumped Spain out of the World Cup in a last-16 penalty shootout on Tuesday with Spanish-born Achraf Hakimi scoring the decisive spot-kick after Spain squandered all three of their attempts, following a 0-0 draw over 120 minutes.
Hakimi, a product of the Real Madrid youth system, calmly slotted his penalty past Unai Simon in Spainâs goal to seal Moroccoâs 3-0 win in the shootout.
With Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, the superstar strikerâs replacement scored a hat trick to lead Portugal over Switzerland 6-1 and into the World Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Goncalo Ramos, a 21-year-old forward who only made his Portugal debut last month, made his first start for his country and demonstrated the kind of clinical finishing Ronaldo was once known for.
Ramos scored the opening goal in the 17th minute and added others in the 51st and 67th â by which time chants of âRONALDO! RONALDO!â were swirling around the 89,000-seat Lusail Stadium.
Ronaldo entered as a substitute in the 72nd minute to loud cheers, though Portugal had the game wrapped up by then with defenders Pepe and Raphael Guerreiro also scoring. Rafael Leao added a late goal in stoppage time.
Manuel Akanji scored for Switzerland. Portugal advanced to the quarterfinals for the third time, after 1966 and 2006, and will play Morocco on Saturday.
Portugal coach Fernando Santos now has to decide whether to stick with Ramos or restore Ronaldo, the top scorer in menâs international soccer and one of the gameâs greatest ever players.
Stick with RamosâŠa no brainer!
Cristiano Ronaldo exited pitch whilst teammates celebrated with Portugal fans
Cristiano Ronaldo opted to exit the pitch before his Portugal teammates, who stayed to celebrate their Round of 16 win with fans at the stadium.
Fernando Santos opted to leave the 37-year-old on the bench against Switzerland and whilst the manager did not confirm his reasoning, it was believed to be because of Ronaldoâs reaction to being substituted against South Korea last week.
His decision paid off though, as 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos took Ronaldoâs place in the starting lineup and he went on to score a hattrick on his first World Cup start. He also became the youngest player to score three in a knockout match since Pele.

As a Messi fan, I hope Argentina defeats the Netherlands, definitely going to be a tight affair though as the dutch are a very difficult side to play against. Hopefully Messi makes the difference like he always does
Dumfries sends warning to Lionel Messi and Argentina ahead of the quarterfinal game.
âThe game is not won by one player. We also have a mission â to fulfil the hearts of the Netherlands. That is the only thing we are here for. We have a goal. We have many qualities in the team. There is a lot of room for improvement, but I think we are on the upward trend. Obviously it has to be better.
Dutch boss Louis van Gaal spoke about a potential weakness in Messiâs game.
Speaking to NOS, Van Gaal said: âMessi is the most dangerous creative player, he is able to create a lot and to score goals himself. But when they lose the ball and the opponent has possession, he doesnât participate much, and this gives us chances [to exploit].â
