Spain, England and Germany won, while Italy drew, on a memorable evening for Romelu Lukaku.
Germany trailed Armenia at the top of Group J before kick-off but that was soon forgotten as Serge Gnabry scored twice in the first 15 minutes, with Marco Reus, Timo Werner, Jonas Hofmann and Karim Adeyemi also on target. As for Spain, they bounced back from their first FIFA World Cup qualifying defeat in 28 years with a comprehensive win over Georgia – José Gayà, Carlos Soler, Ferran Torres and Pablo Sarabia the scorers.
Romelu Lukaku marked his 100th appearance for Belgium with his 67th international goal as the Red Devils secured a comfortable victory against the Czech Republic. The Chelsea striker is only the sixth player to earn 100 caps for the Red Devils. Meanwhile, Italy failed to win for the second successive game, but their record-breaking 36th match unbeaten was some consolation as the Azzurri were held by fellow UEFA EURO 2020 notables Switzerland.
Bukayo Saka marked his 20th birthday with a goal as England cruised past Andorra, while Gareth Bale hit a hat-trick in Kazan, including a stoppage-time winner, as Wales came from behind to beat Belarus. Elsewhere, Robert Lewandowski scored twice in Poland’s 7-1 stroll in San Marino but was upstaged a little by team-mate Adam Buksa, who got three goals.
Eden Hazard has scored for the Belgian National team for the first time in almost 2 years. The last time he scored was back in November 2019.
Defender Ruben Dias called on Portugal to tighten up at the back after shipping four goals in as many games during their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Gareth Bale insists Wales are focused on upsetting Belgium and winning their World Cup qualifying group.
England travel to Poland on Wednesday to face their nearest challengers in World Cup qualifying and victory would put Qatar firmly in sight.
The Netherlands won their key contest with Turkey while France, Denmark and Erling Haaland all starred on Wednesday night.
Memphis Depay hit his first international treble – after seven doubles previously – as the Netherlands dismantled Turkey 6-1 in Amsterdam and replace them at the top of Group G. Davy Klaassen’s opener after 54 seconds set the tone, with Çağlar Söyüncü sent off before half-time. Guus Til and Donyell Malen scored late goals before Cengiz Ünder pulled one back at the end in Turkey’s worst World Cup qualifying loss since an 8-0 defeat by England in 1984.
Griezmann moved level with Michel Platini as France’s third-highest scorer as his brace sank Finland in Décines. Les Bleus played some electrifying football, not least the opening goal, teed up by Karim Benzema and finished by Griezmann, who fired in a second from a tight angle as world champions won for the first time in six matches.
Scotland gave their World Cup hopes a major boost with a battling victory in Vienna which lifted them to second place in their section but left Austria off the pace in fourth. Lyndon Dykes got the crucial goal, drilling a penalty down the middle following a push on Che Adams, who was excellent throughout.
Fedor Smolov celebrated receiving the captain’s armband by capitalising on generous defending to poke Russia ahead against Malta in Moscow, although his side survived some nervy moments before Zelimkhan Bakaev sealed victory with a late penalty. The Russians are second to Croatia on goal difference in their pool.
Denmark are the only side with six wins out of six, Simon Kjær netting a rare goal 11 days after accepting the 2021 UEFA President’s award, while Erling Haaland struck a hat-trick in Norway’s comfortable success. Elsewhere, it was a case of no Cristiano Ronaldo, no problem for Portugal as they stayed top of their group with a resounding win in Azerbaijan, courtesy of Bernardo Silva, André Silva and Diogo Jota goals.
