Ben White made 8 tackles against Crystal Palace last tonight — it’s the most tackles an Arsenal player has made in a Premier League match in over three years, ever since Lucas Torreira made 9 on 19 Jan 2019 v Chelsea.

Fulham will be desperate to shed the tag of being a yo-yo team after pendulating between the EFL Championship and the Premier League in the last few seasons. The Cottagers returned to the top flight after finishing atop the standings in the second tier. Marco Silva’s men will be raring to go in the 2022/23 season after a decent pre-season campaign that saw them beat OGC Nice and Estoril Praia.
On the other hand, Liverpool started and ended the pre-season poorly, losing 4-0 to Manchester United last month and 3-0 to Strasbourg a few days ago. The Reds also went down 1-0 to Red Bull Salzburg. But Jurgen Klopp and his charges will be buoyed by the win over Manchester City to clinch the FA Community Shield.
Liverpool went down 1-0 to a Mario Lemina goal the last time they locked horns with Fulham, back in March 2021.
Bernd Leno, Joao Palhinha, Andreas Pereira, Manor Solomon and Kevin Mbabu could all make their debuts for the home side, although Harry Wilson and Nathaniel Chalobah are struggling with knocks.
For Liverpool, meanwhile, Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Caoimhin Kelleher, Calvin Ramsay, Kostas Tskimikas and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all miss their League opener.
Darwin Nunez, however, will make his Premier League debut, while Alisson Becker returns. Naby Keita will soon return to training but will not quite make the season opener in south west London.
Fulham were unbeaten across both Premier League games against Liverpool in 2020/21, drawing 1-1 at home and winning 1-0 at Anfield. Despite suffering relegation that season, the Cottagers’ four points against the Reds was their joint-most against an opponent (also four vs Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion).
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp lost his first Premier League meeting with Marco Silva in February 2017, with his side losing 0-2 away at Hull City. Since then, Klopp is unbeaten in his last four outings against the Portuguese tactician in the competition (W2 D2), with the most recent being a 5-2 win against Silva’s Everton.
On the five previous occasions Fulham have been newly promoted to the English top-flight, they have lost their first league match of the season, doing so in 1949/50, 1959/60, 2001/02, 2018/19 and 2020/21. On the other hand, Liverpool have won their first Premier League match in each of the last four seasons, the longest ongoing run in the top flight, scoring at least three goals in every victory (15 goals in total).
Fulham are without a win in their previous ten Premier League games (D2 L8), with their last top-flight victory coming against Liverpool in March 2021. Meanwhile, Liverpool are unbeaten in their most recent 19 Premier League games (W16 D3) since a 1-0 loss at Leicester City in December 2021.
Mohamed Salah has scored in Liverpool’s opening Premier League game in each of his five seasons with the club, with the Egyptian the only player in the competition’s history to score in Gameweek 1 five years in a row. Salah has seven such goals in total, with only three players netting more (Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney, eight each).
Everton just about survived the wrath of relegation last season, finishing in 16th place, four points clear of the drop zone. Manager Frank Lampard, who took over Rafael Benitez midway through the campaign, has now had enough time to imprint his ideas on the squad and fans will be expecting the team to perform well than they did last time out.
The pre-season preparations have not been ideal by any means for the Toffees as they lost their first two fixtures against Arsenal and MLS side Minnesota United. But back-to-back victories against Blackpool and Dynamo Kyiv should give Lampard and his team some confidence heading into this vital opening clash.
As for Chelsea, the summer has largely been dominated by their hit-and-miss transfer window. The Blues have been left frustrated by their inability to close deals, leading to several targets slipping out of their hands. But they have managed to sign a few players in recent days, which could ease some tension within the camp.
While Chelsea finished third last term, they were nearly 20 points behind the top two clubs and will be gunning to close down that gap. Much like Everton, though, Thomas Tuchel’s men have not been at their best in pre-season, losing to Charlotte FC and Arsenal, although they did their last pre-season friendly against Udinese.
Both teams will be keen on kicking the new season off with a victory, while Lampard will also be gunning to prove a point to his former employers.
Lampard will be without Dominic Calvert-Lewin after the England international suffered a “freak” injury in training, meaning Dele Alli will likely deputise through the middle of the attack with Salomon Rondon suspended.
Tom Davies, Andre Gomes and Seamus Coleman are not expected to be involved.
For Chelsea, Sterling and Koulibaly will likely make their Premier League debuts for the club and Tuchel has largely a clean bill of health from which to choose. Marc Cucurella could make his debut for the club in some capacity at least, though is almost certain to start on the bench.
Everton have won each of their previous four Premier League home games against Chelsea. It is their best run in this league fixture since winning seven on the bounce between 1923 and 1935.
Chelsea have won only three of their last 14 Premier League visits to Goodison Park (D2, L9).
Everton are unbeaten in their opening Premier League match in the last 10 seasons (W4, D6), the longest ongoing run in the top flight.
Chelsea conceded 11 Premier League away goals last season, a joint-league low alongside Manchester City.
Chelsea were top of the Premier League table after 14 matches of last season, one point ahead of Manchester City and two points clear of Liverpool. The Blues went on to finish third, 19 points behind the Citizens and 18 points adrift of the Reds.
