Manchester City fans reacted with shock to the announcement of the team to face Chelsea on Saturday.
But while 10 of the starting 11 might have been chosen by a fans’ poll, the absence of defender Ruben Dias drew a few gasps.

The Portuguese international has become synonymous with City’s vast improvement as a defensive unit in the past 18 months. It seemed weird that he was missing for City’s clash against their nearest contenders Chelsea.

That led to speculation — fuelled by City’s policy of not naming players who are sidelined due to Covid-19 on medical confidentiality grounds — that Dias might have contracted the Coronavirus.

Guardiola was asked after the game why Dias was absent, and simply replied “I decided on John, that’s all.”
